Winter is coming in WA and it seems like it's gonna be a cold one this year. To make matters a bit more complicated (or good?) I may have gotten a good new job opportunity in the North Cascades Natl. Park area so looks like I may be in for a daily frozen commute in the Hardbody. What are some good tire chains ya'll swear by? I'm on the factory 31's with Cooper A/T's and price isn't really an issue just need something that won't plunge me into the Skagit.

Don't forget to toss 2 sandbags in the back of the bed. I found this was needed, during the years I drove in Colorado. Also, cheap weight that can get used in other ways, as needed...
4x4 should not need chains, right? Gonna carry 2 sets? (4)

i feel like a couple of sandbags is a waste of time/money, especially if you’re considering chains

Sand can be used to gain more traction, under the proper conditions. Good to have a "Plan B"...
Also, the added weight, in the @$$, assists with grip, which D21's lack... I was 2wd in Colorado, this helped immensely! ...never ran chains.

Never needed anything with my 4x4. Except when I sunk it, axles deep, in watery mud.

Yeah maybe I'm overthinking this, I'm just inexperienced in the snow. I'm a former desert rat about to possibly live and work in one of the snowiest areas I've ever been to.

Yeah I don't think it's needed but was airing on the side of caution. If I do go that route is two sets the norm? I honestly don't know. I've always seen vehicles only have one set on at a time. |

In some passes in the Rockies, e.g., I-70 in CO, chains are required during certain conditions.
I have some old ones that strap through the rims, but I'd only use them for getting unstuck. If I still carried them.

Chains are over-rated....except when the Poe-lease say that you need them. On those CO roads, if you have 4x4, w/snow tires, then you don't need them.
You don't need 2 sets of chains. If you need 2 sets, then you should stay home. Put one set on the front, and you will be good for up to a foot of snow. |
