Alright, I've decided I want to throw an exhaust on my truck. Here's what I'm looking for:
1.) under $110 total. This is how much it is to have the local exhaust shop put it in...I think I can do it cheaper. 2.) No ricey sound. It's a truck, not a civic. 3.) No pipe bender required. I don't have access to one. From my research, it seems that 2.25" piping provides the best performance boost while maintaining good back pressure. Any opposing views on this? I know I read on Mr. Wellwoods tech Ed site, he used 2.5" but I'm not sure on the advantages or disadvantages of that. I'm not an engineer and still don't fully understand how a performance exhaust system works. I will be cutting the cat out and replacing it with piping. Less restriction, no emissions testing in TN(yet). I debated just gutting the cat, but I figure it'll be just as easy to replace it with pipe. I also plan to clamp this together, as opposed to welding. I don't have the welding skills and rust isn't really an issue in this region of the country. Clamps it is. My Questions: 1.) Muffler choice. I'm thinking flowmaster 40 series. Opinions? I should add it is a Ka24e, four banger. 2.) What pipe/bends do I need to purchase to run the exhaust, following the stock path? 3.) Pipe size; is 2 1/4" sound good to everyone? Thanks any and all for replies! |

$110 doesn't sound bad depending on where they start running the new pipe.
You can get factory style replacement parts that are prebent, but they're basically a stock replacement, not performance.

I'm running a Hush Power muffler with cat removed. It sounds pretty good. No rice rocket or popping. Just a strong tune for a 4cyl. Flowmaster bought hush power and the model is here: http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/?page_id=11181. Any of their cone shaped interiors are comparable to the hush power I have.

Thanks guys. And @Alabama, that's from the cat back. Obviously legally they can't delete the cat for me.

I had a shop do mine cut out the cat and put a flow master something or other right before the axle. They welded it from the down pipe with no flanges so it is all once peice and will never leak!! Sounds nice and surprisingly much better than my straight piped 240 with a dual cam. Not ricey at all just a solid deep tone with a gnarly rumble when you're behind it. I used 2 1/4 diameter pipe.

I am running a John Deere 2" tractor muffler. No cat. I cut and reconfigured the OEM piping. Dumps before the rear tire.

You like that sound? Mine has 2 1/4" pipe, no cat, and a flowmaster 40 and I think it sounds ricey to the max... Bees in a can sound, too much rasp. IMO I'm swapping in a Borla XR1 or a Magnaflow of some sort soon.

I'm running 2" adapted to 3x18 thrush cherry bomb with a 45 degree turn down. No cat. Pops and crackles like mad. At idle it sounds mean, I get asked up the engine upgrades constantly (none) pulling gears through town, mean. 50-60mph ugh annoying, 60mph+ almost sickening loud and droning.

A buddy of mine had a 3" thrush muffler that I got a great deal on. I ran 2 1/2 welded to the back of the new cat to the 3" muffler and back down to 2 1/2" over the axle and out behind the rear axle and out in front of the bumper! I lost too much back pressure and I get a little smoke now, which I didn't do before. It sounds great. Nice and throaty and just a little kackle. I'm really happy but I'm planning on outing in a short glass pack for a little more back pressure. It's a little loud at fwy speeds too. But everything cost less than $100!
