Default I might need a car

I might be looking around for a some what of a respectable ride something that looks nice on the outside as well as running well. The job that I might be taking will not allow me to drive up in my 95 D21 ( a work in progress)
I wont need to carry anything, packages or people.
If Im looking for something in the low rent district of say $2000 what would you all suggest I be looking at ?

Known reliable older cars are the w124 chassis mercedes benz, the first gen Lexus ls400 (90-94), second gen Toyota Camry (87-91), any Honda made in the 90s to 2k.....just do the leg work on past maintenance.

I drive a company car one week out of the month. It is an ‘06 civic with close to 200k, and it still gets 36 mpg. It might get 40 if I used premium fuel and kept my foot off the throttle pedal.

Personally I'd pick up a descent used GM W-Body with a 3.8 or 3.1L engine if I needed a daily. They are everywhere, stupid reliable, and usually get upper 20's or low 30's which is impressive for their size and power. So you'd be looking at a Pontiac Grand Prix, Buick Regal, or a Olds Cutlass. The bigger Buicks (Park Avenue/Lesabre) or a Pontiac Bonneville or Grand Am will be basically the same thing also. Really any of those fwd V6 GM cars from the 90's and 2000's were damn good cars, and cheap also. I had a 91 Grand Prix for my first car at 16, and it took a beating in style. Not to mention, the Park Avenue Ultra and Grand Prix GTP in later years came with an Eaton supercharger, and they were fairly quick cars considering what they were. Newer (2000's) Grand Prix GXP's even had a 5.3L LS engine, so that would be badass.

We love my wife's 08 Chevy HHR. I haven't done anything but basic maintenance, wear items, and a timing chain tensioner (stupid simple in these, literally screws in). Might be a little more than 2k though, but it's constantly getting 27-30mpg and has had enough room to haul 5 33" tires and wheels, plus groceries with the seat folded down (not that is a priority of yours, but I always appreciated it) We got ours with just under 100k on it, and it has 165k now. More or less the same chassis and drivetrain as a cobalt also.

Tough to beat an old Benz if you're decent with a wrench. I'd also look at a '95-99 Maxima in that price range. I think the following generation is pretty much the same car, but IMO the interior is ugly.

The 3.1 gm v6 and the smaller 2.8 were damn good motors. Her first car was a 90 Chevy Lumina Eurosport. It blew a head gasket due to a coolant leak, I had the engine replaced with a junkyard engine and drove it two more years before that one fell apart.

My mom had a Chevy Corsica that had the 3.1.....it ran so good she thought I was nuts when I drove it 1200 miles round trip to Florida, and he car had over 200k on the clock.

I bought this for $1100. But that was in 1972, it was 2 years old then but I still have it.

I was going to suggest an Altima from that era, too. The Altima might even be able to provide parts in a pinch - since it would have the 2.4L engine.

I'm going to play the boring card here and suggest a 1990s camry or corolla. They are about as exciting as waiting in line at the dentist but are dead simple to fix as far as FWD cars go and rarely ever broken to begin with. Parts are very affordable and they will run damn near forever if you take care of them. The only thing to worry about is the timing belts, but all nearly all older toyotas with belt-driven valvetrains are a non-interference design. No special tools or special fluids needed save for the red coolant (you can also use zerex asian formula, but it's not really any cheaper).

Another recommendation would be a '90s to mid-2000s buick land yacht with the 3800 series. Fix all the weak points in the cooling system and you're good to go. Parts for these are also dirt cheap. I can't speak for your neck of the woods but around here you can pick up a not-so-nice specimen for under $1000 all day every day.

I too vote for the FWD GM C body as well as a same era Toyota Camry or Corolla along with a Honda Accord or Civic from ca 1990 on up.
