Default Z24i Spark Plug

Hey Forum,

Looking to exchange my spark plugs and ignition wires. I am sure this is a common question, but I havent found a lot of information regarding it - from what I have seen, the Z24i commonly has 8 spark plugs, 4x intake and 4x exhaust. However my '89 only has 4 plugs in and only 4 wires. I dont have any history on the vehicle, but was this a 'feature' in Australian D21s, or should I be looking at getting all 8 plugs?

Thanks for any information.

I'm not familiar with the Z24i. Maybe you got an early KA24E engine, or something else has been swapped in by a prior owner (PO)?

Or you have a diesel. :-)

89 was the last year for the Z24I (USA any way) they used a little hotter plug on the exhaust side, oe pt#22401-V1416 & 22401-V1415

I'm also thinking that you might have a KA24e.

Can you post a picture of it?

89 in the YS would be a Z24i. He is in australia. Could be carbed and not injected.

Might help if he posts up some pictures of the engine using Imgur dot com or something. I would remove the air filter first, so we can get a look at whether it is carbed or has throttle body injection. Could even be fuel rail injection. Who knows? Nissan had fuel rail injection prior to 1989 but it was mostly in their higher-end vehicles like the ZX or the 810 sedan.

You are better off without the "other four". The 8 plug system was done for emissions reasons from my understanding. The ECU actually shut off the exhaust side during heavy loading and acceleration to reduce engine noise.
I have run mine with only the intake side and could not feel any power difference. I unintentionally ran it with exhaust side only once and it cut out every time I got on it. LOL
