That's going to make it hard to check the timing, then.
I guess you have to have your buddy do the timing while you steer the vehicle. Otherwise, you'd have to use the emergency brake or wheel chocks.

I have loosened the two bolts holding the distributor down but can't get it to move any suggestions.

Could be a little corrosion or something holding it in place. Might try tapping it with a block of wood and a hammer.

my truck is a 97 too, I found timing specs on EC-323, Under: Inspection and adjustment. page-463. I know I saw it somewhere else too but I couldn't find it just now.
