i also read that there is a vac reservoir in the right front inner fender on the w124s, and if one of the lines is bad, it wont let the vents operate.

mercedes built really good vehicles, but damn..........the design changes........

Went with the youngster homie who can't drive standard to pick this up the other night.

Interesting set of options on this car. 5-speed with heated, lumbar leather seats. Oddly the leather was in great shape and the exterior was burnt to hell. Dunno how they pulled that one off because the leather in these cars is rarely this nice even in decent cars.

Car also had that Euro Delivery shit where it gets picked up at the factory in Germany and driven around before they ship it to the dealer in US.

I have to ask...why vacuum operated HVAC components? Is it just one of those holdouts from back in the day? Ford does this too and it can be a pain to track down the source of the problem.

On another note that's a sweet ride. European cars aren't really my thing but I can respect the amount of time/work/knowledge it takes to keep one in good running order.

Both holdouts as you mention, and the use of all the pneumatics is for simplicity and reliability. If you think about it, there aren't a bunch of electric actuators and motors to fail.

Mercedes of this era are actually extremely reliable once sorted, but any vehicle the age these things are getting to will require attention to keep them in order.

According to the vacuum diagram of my car, the reservoir for the HVAC stuff is behind the fender on mine as well.

Manual W124 is EXTREMELY rare in US. I feel incredibly lucky to have found one to gut.

4cyl gearbox from 190e 2.3L, which is more common, will bolt up to your motor and take stock power all day. Keep an eye out!

gotta change the rear brakes. the fronts were done a few months back, and i ordered all 4 new rotors and new front ceramic pads. why i never ordered rear pads remains a mystery. the rears are making the rivet riding on the rotor rub noise.

this will give me an excuse to put the spare tire on. i bought 5 new ones 4k miles ago, and since i gotta take the wheels off to do the brakes, im gonna stick the right rear in the trunk and put the spare on so they wear evenly. thank god mercedes gave this car a full size matching wheel spare.

that is one of the first things i did to my truck after i got the chromed 14 inch wheels. i went to a junkyard and bought a 5th one and stuck it under the bed. the better half asked me why i did that, and i told her the reason is simple. it is such a pain in the ass to change a tire on the truck, if i do have to use the spare, it is staying on the truck and the repaired/replaced tire will become the new spare.

Those rear pads were gone. Right right one was worse. The insulator on the back of the pad was thicker than the material that fell out. This thing stops now.

I joined several w124 groups on Facebook. One guy had several parts for sale. The one thing he had I really wanted got sold before I saw the post. Stamped stainless door sills. 4 of them. They even had Mercedes Benz pressed in them. What really sucked was they sold for 80 bucks. Dammit.

ordered both front lower ball joints. i watched a video on changing the 124 lower ball joints. remove c-clip and whack it a few times with a good sized hammer and it falls right out. also ordered a trans filter kit.
