Default Tire size ?'s

I have a standard 2wd SC HB. Running 15" rims from a late 90's 4wd.
my rims.png
IIRC my tires are 205/70. I'll have to re-check.

The problem is my Speedo reads 7mph faster than it is actually going (i.e. speedo says 57mph, I am actually going 50 mph)
I like the way 235/60's look on a co-worker's truck, but do not know how wide the rims are.
I would like to get the outside tire diameter as close to stock setting as possible. Does anybody know what tire/rim combo came on the truck originally. (assuming a 14" rim)

Check the sticker in the door jamb, it should have the tire size listed on it

Largest size tire that was available on an 88 2wd was the 215/75/14, if you want to run the same OD size but in a 15" the tire size would be a 215/70/15. Per the info I'm seeing the difference in speed would be if speedometer shows you are doing 50 with the 205/70/15, actual speed would be 50.4.

The reason your speed is so much further off is your truck probably came with either a 185/75/14 or a 195/75/14. The speedometer gear would be setup for the stock size tire so switching to a larger (or smaller) diameter tire will effect the speed reading.

For example if truck came with a 185/75/14 and you now have a 205/70/15 the speedometer will show 50 but actual would be 52.8,

with the 195/75/14 tire size stock the difference running a 205/70/15 would be showing 50 actual 51.6 mph.

You could replace the speedometer gear with one from an SE truck which would get the speedometer back closer to stock when running the 205/70/15's.

Here are the Outside diameters (approximately) of the 6 tire sizes:

185/75/14 - 24.9 (stock size on STD models)

195/75/14 - 25.5 (stock optional size on STD, E & XE models)

215/75/14 - 26.7 (stock size on SE models)

205/70/15 - 26.3 (Your current size)

215/70/15 - 26.9

and your friends 235/60/15 - 26.1 but wider

To match what the stock tire size was, would need to know what the stock size is, check the label as was suggested.

If you send me your Vin number I can decode it to see what options the truck originally came with and tell you what exact model it is.

I look up Vin #'s a lot for others, and I delete it after I'm done.

Poboi, The DigiHUD app for android is good to use if your speedo is off, or to use if you want a heads up display at night. has a nice blue color. you can adjust it for different number sizes.

it displays in regular mode for straight on viewing, or mirror mode to reflect off of your windshield.

just dim the dash lights and sit your phone on the dash, i use a cloth under mine so it doesn't slide around.

I don't do much night time driving in my HB. It's not my daily driver, but it is my worker bee. Mostly short runs to Lowe's/Home depot, and an occasional stroll around town. But I like the idea of a "heads up display" I'll check into that DigiHud App.
