Default Questions about changing up my D21

So I had to change vehicles and settled on a 1993 D21 with 4cyl and ZERO rust. The mechanic I trust said that the motor is in good shape. It is a manual transmission and no leaks. I had him change all the cables, hoses spark plugs and fluids. The radiator was new and the same with the water pump.

I wanted a 6 since I have to drive 125 miles each way every week to exchange my daughter, but every 6 I looked at had problems. Would have been nice for the extra power and better fuel economy on the hills I have to drive.

Anways, cosmetically it isn't pretty. So this what I am planning:

1. The dash is bad, so I'm looking for a 1995-1996 dash and cluster and replace the bad one with that one. I talked to the senior mechanic at Nissan by my place and he said the firewall is the same, so as long as I get the AC Tube and the brackets, the dash, and the bezel, I should be good to go. Anyone have any experience changing the dash?

2. I am saving about $40 week in gas, not including the cheaper insurance. I would like a little more mileage and power, is there way to improve mileage and power without the truck sounding like a ricer?

I'd like to change the lights on the truck. I am thinking these for headlights:

https://www.amazon.com/Headlights-He...s%2C209&sr=8-5

or:

https://www.amazon.com/OVOTOR-Headli...%2C209&sr=8-21

(I like these better, especially if i can use the side running lights as blinker lights)

I was told these work, does anyone have any experience?

3. Is there a way to change the turn signals to fog lights and then have the turn signals on the side running lights?

4. If I get a cluster with a tach, can I install the tach and make it usable?

As a side note, I'm going to get the 3 main dents (1 quarter panel and 2 small ones) fixed and then have it painted a metallic dark grey, not sure if I want a chrome grill or to paint the grill and bumper metallic black. Thoughts about an aftermarket grill, I'd hate to get one and then find out it was cheapo material and flaking within months. Do you have any thoughts on that?

I have the interior going to be done after the paint, before I put the new dash in. Good company and they'll do it for $750, floor, seat, and ceiling. I plan on putting some LED lights under the seat and the dash, partially because I like it, but also so my daughter can see during our long drives at night. She likes playing with her toys. It's a bench seat.

I'll be replacing the tail lights with a different housing with LEDs. Brighter and improves the look over the stock ones, especially with a paint job.

Anyways, I'd really appreciate your feedback and comments.

Highway tires, and reduce weight are two ways to improve, retain MPG.

Of course, a great tune up, and replace the upstream O2 sensor if not already done.

the other thing to consider is some kind of bed cover. depending on cost, youll never see a payback in cash. if youre desperate enough, a 1/16th in thick plywood cover could work for the long trips. figure out some clamping system to keep it from flying off and its light enough.

the aero on a truck is the same as a refrigerator.

Okay, thank you. It has highway tires and not off-road tires. I''ll look at the O2 sensor and see if I should replace it.

Oh, where in Colorado? Front range? West side? .....or somewhere in between?

I spent 20+ in CoSp, sorta miss it...... but came home.

Sorry for the delay. I was stationed at Carson, but now in Greeley.

Wish I would have gotten more replies, but here are the pictures I promised:

I am trying to save up so I can get the dent removed, painted, and the interior done.

For stuff like your item 3 and 4, yeah you can definitely use the side markers as blinkers and fit fog lights in where the blinkers go in the bumper, you'll just have to re-wire some stuff. For fogs you'll probably have to make a little wiring harness yourself as I don't think fog lights were ever a factory option on these (I could be wrong). I believe the wiring for the tach is present on all the trucks, so if you get a correct cluster (be sure to get one that matches your dash shape, trans type, and engine configuration) it should work.

The tachs on these clusters aren't the best though and do have a tendency to fail. Mine hasn't worked since around 2014.

Ah, Ft Cartoon! Knew it well, actually resided in Security, prior to our move to the PNW.

Thanks for the image. Paint? What do you need paint for? Looks good...

Did you know that the color Red is one of the fastest oxidizing paint colors we have? Absorbs lotsa UV. If you go red, again, have them add a UV protectant to the main color and the clear coat.... if available.
