All that crunching when turning is just the tires rubbing. The ticking is the lifters.

My 90 Nissan d21 automatic. The column gear shifter—-the overdrive button on the end quit working. What could it be? The wiring under the dash is good. Do I have to find another shifter or is it something else?????please help me

If you go back a few pages you may find your question has already been answered.

EDIT: If you use a regular pushbutton on/off switch, you'll want one that is normally open, such that the overdrive is on when it's pressed in and off when it isn't, just like the button on the shifter. What actually happens when you press the button is it grounds the O/D cancel solenoid inside the valve body to energize it, as well as the "O/D OFF" light on the instrument cluster to illuminate it. Bypassing the dead switch and replacing it with another one is probably way less work than replacing the entire shifter assembly, let alone trying to find one.

It's best to start a new thread for individual problems, it's easy for stuff to slip through the cracks in the "what have you done" thread.

Get yourself some contact cleaner. I suspect the button/switch, on the shiftier, is no longer making contact, or closing. Disco the neg on the battery when you do the following:

The cleaner bottle should be an aerosol with a small attachment/extension on the tip to get into tight areas. Spray around the edge of the button, while pressing repeatedly and often..... don't be cheap, the liquid needs to get deep into the switch. The contacts have oxidized and no longer have a good conductivity.

This may work, it may not. You'll not know till you try it. BTW, this is basically just ether and is quite flammable. It will flash dry in a few seconds, it does not stick around long.

Or follow what SBJ said... Good call man!

What amp did you go with? I still have to put my new panda subs in my car and start audio in the truck.
