Default Custom dash material

I'm nearly done with my custom dash prototype. I built it from 3/4" mdf supported with 1x1 bracing. I was thinking of using the form to create either a fiberglass or aluminum finished product. But I'm really liking the idea of a full leather dash vs painting it to match the body. My question is: if i plan to have the dash covered in leather, is there any reason why i shouldn't just keep it mdf? Seems like aluminum or fiberglass would be alot more time, labor and expense for the same end result. My dash will hold nothing but a few speedhut gauges and a few speakers, its not a curvy complicated design, and right now it weighs a little less than the factory dash it's replacing. I figure speaker boxes are made with mdf and last a very long time, but maybe a dash it's different somehow? I'm open to advice.
