Default Hello!!! Any Suggestions?

Hi everyone! You all have been So much help since I bought my Hardbody, Thanks for being here!!!

Here's my story, or at least part of it. The short list first, details below.

List of things I have done so far
  • Replaced engine
  • Replaced IATS
  • Replaced MAF sensor
  • Replaced Fuel filter
  • Filled exhaust leak at EGR tube
  • A lot of cosmetic work...and a Thule rack!

Problems I currently have
  • Engine will not idle
  • Noticeable power reduction during acceleration.
  • When MAF is unplugged the engine will idle but will not drive.
  • No CEL, no codes.

The short story long...
I've had this little beauty for a couple of months now. Put in a remanufactured engine from ATK last month. The previous engine blew a head gasket and started billowing smoke out of the tailpipe. A catalytic converter is my next purchase, but it ran like champ until about a week ago. When it started to die idling at stop lights. The idle was low enough that I would flip on the A/C and it would kill the engine. The only code was 32- EGR function, which I already know was a problem because of a crack in the weld at the front pipe where the EGR tube connects. I filled the tank with gas and all my problems seemed to go away. A few days ago while driving home from work the RPM started dropping drastically while going at speed down the road. No matter how much gas I gave it the engine would rev up and drop over and over no matter the speed. Strange thing was...it was idling fine. So I limped home.

Yesterday I had some time to work on it. I checked all the fuses, shook around the wiring harness to test for bad connections, rechecked the codes still only 32-EGR function, checked that the EGR diaphragm was functioning, sealed the hole in the front pipe with some SteelStik, checked all of the injectors with a tiny curtain rod stethoscope, replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner. Then took it out for a spin. For a short while it ran better that I had seen yet. Then the truck started dropping RPM and losing power, CEL, Codes 12-MAF and 41-IATS. Strange, I had just replaced the IATS. So I unplugged the MAF and the vehicle idled fine. So I went to O'rielly ( O O O O'rielly...) and bought a MAF sensor...oof $180 including $50 core. Now... The truck runs down the road without dieing but won't idle unless I keep my foot on the gas. I can feel a lack of power and acceleration that I attribute to the clogged Catalytic converter from the previous engine dumping coolant through it. No one around me carries a direct fit replacement. When the shop that did the engine replacement opens this morning, I'll see if they can get a replacement Catalytic converter on for me before I have to go into work. If you all have any suggestions I would love to hear them. Pictures to follow.

So that's my D21.
You all are Great!

Thanks Dragon.
The shop that's looking at it unhooked the Cat, no change. They are still working it out. Could the alternator cause problems like this?

Sounds like you have a large vacuum leak. Not from a vacuum line, but from a gasket on the intake manifold or throttle body. Also, check that the timing is set to 10 degrees BTDC

I thought it might be a vacuum leak, so I sprayed carb cleaner around every gaskets surface I could see. No change in idle at all.
I'll check in on the timing.

I just heard back from the shop who's looking at the truck. As it turns out the MAF that I bought was defective. So they got the engine running fine....but the transmission is shot.

I'm sending it over to the transmission shop on Monday. Time for a rebuild!!!

Good thing I Love tiny trucks!

I was just going to shoot from the hip and say possible fuel pump problem or similar. All the other ideas were taken already. Glad to hear you found it was a bad MAF sensor. Nice to see a problem get cured.
