I understand high end gears are much easier on the engine for highway speeds.

The HG46 is the lowest gear axle the Hardbody trucks came with (that I know of). They would probably be great with monster-tall tires, but that would make pulling a tractor really difficult.

That gear is only good for tires that came stock on the Pathfinder. Which were 235/75/15.

my former 87 SE-V6 had the 4.62 gears, non over drive auto trans, got pulled over doing 105 (was going down a hill), can't recall if it had the stock 31's or 33's but it drove just fine, think I had 33's on it, other than the RPM's being high. ( usually was at 4K at around 60MPH, with the 33's)

Wow! Must have been deep in the red at that speed with 4.62s!

Cant imagine a 235/75/15 with 4.62s! So many revs at highway speeds! Thats the tire size my rig has from the factory with HG41s!

Gotta love the south! Cops are nice and lenient on speeding around here. The only time I got a speeding ticket was because I was airborne through a red light.

I have an HG46 with discs from a '94 Pathy. Ran it with 33s for years behind the Z24i. The gearing helped offset the 33s, but it was still weak sauce on the interstate. Was good for 70 to 80 on the flats. 65 or less on grades.

I'm now running the same axle behind the 5.3L Vortec V8 with 35s. Great axle. Very strong.

My tires are the same height as the 235/75/15. When I put the 18" Titans on, I used that size in the tire charts to make sure my new tires were the same height.

I think the tire height, low rear end gearing, 1-ton suspension, and slack in the steering all added to the excitement factor when I was maintaining 70 MPH on I-40.

FYI: Here's a pic of that tornado from Sunday. I guess it never actually touched down on the interstate. By the time it got close, all I could see was wind and hail:
