Default Cheap ass trailer build

I haven't been doing a whole lot of work to the truck lately, I've been really busy with a lot of other projects around the house.
Recently I did a custom hidden hitch install on the back of my truck for a recovery point and for some trail tools, and after talking with the old man he convinced me that it's time for me to build my own trailer.

Some pictures of my hidden hitch


Dad has his own trailer but it's huge and too big for my needs, I need something that's just big enough to put the quad and the snowmobile on, and maybe a small load of wood every once in a while.

And so begins the dirt cheap trailer build...

Like everything I build I want it to be indestructible, so naturally i'm building it from steel, with full length leaf springs, on a h233b, on 15x7 Xterra wheels, with 225/75R15's. I've already set the trailer up for tilt-n-load, and the deck is going to measure 10ft long by 51" wide (just a hair wider than the snowmobile)

I'm happy with the width of the deck and the axle, mainly because the trailer will tuck behind the truck nicely on the freeway and the tires will follow perfectly in the ruts of the truck, should help it track nice and straight on the road.


This rack was donated to me at work, it was used to ship billboard signs, the first picture I already have the tilt tacked in place.


everything cut off the racking, welded some strapping up the middle for added support, axle mocked up.



I think the tilt is great.
I have the axle temporarily welded in place so I can move the thing around the yard, I don't have the leaf springs yet as i'm trying to find a decent cheap set.

The damage so far:
Racking from work/ Deck of trailer - Free ninety nine
Rear axle from scrapped hardbody - Kinda paid for itself with the limited slip/motor/etc. so i'm calling that free
3 15x7 wheels from Xterra - Free from a friend (I owe him a coffee $2.15)
2 225/75R15's from U-pull yard - $30
Trailer light kit w/wiring from Princess Auto - $25.00

Total so far: $57.15 Not too shabby

I feel like the big expense will be some pressure treated lumber to top the deck with

Looks good man. The tilt is a great feature. A guy I work for has a POS 4x8 trailer but it tilts. It's nice to be able to drive a riding mower right onto the deck instead of lifting it.

Yeah the tilt was a necessity, just drive the snowmobile right on up the trailer, put the pin through and done. I'm trying to keep this as low buck as possible but still do a really good job, I realize the thing is gonna be heavy in comparison to stub axles or an aluminum trailer but at least it will be a lot more aerodynamic and the h233b will follow perfectly in the ruts of my truck so it will track straight.

When it's all said and done i'll take it up to the scales and weigh it just to compare to my dads double wide trailer

A little update on this today, after much delay with school and cash being tight I figure it's time to get back at this before school starts up.
I finally got the thing sitting on leaf springs today and have a good idea of where it will sit when it's all finished.
At this point I think I may need to add one extra leaf spring to the pack in order to keep the deck from hitting the axle under load and when tilting. I haven't loaded the trailer up with weight yet to see how much it compresses with 500-1000 lbs of weight on it.


Otherwise, all that's left to do is buy some wood to deck it over, I have to mount and wire some lights, get a licence plate, a tongue, and a drop ball mount for my truck.

I know this picture is crap but based on this height I'll need about a 6-8" drop ball for my truck in order to keep this baby level on the road.

So progress continues on the cheap ass trailer build.
Late last night I finally put the tongue on the trailer and finished all of the major welding that needs to occur apart from some tie downs and fenders.

I waited until after school today to test fit the trailer on the truck and snap a few pictures.

and tilted


So the thing sits a little tiny bit too low, i'm gonna need to put one more leaf spring on either side to bring it up to the proper height.
Other than that I have all the U-bolts attached, the wiring has been ran through the frame, and the side lights are on.

Next step: Fenders, mount tail lights/ license plate, Deck over with wood, and wire the connector pin into the trucks wiring harness.

Total cost to date:
U-bolts - $30
Coupler, drop hitch, welding wire, nuts & bolts - $70

Total: $ 157.15

I estimate i'll have to spend another $200 on wood and a license plate before i'm on the road.
