Default transfer case seperation

Ok one really quick question, does anyone know if you can get the back half of the transfer case out without dropping the cross member. I have everything apart and it feels like it wants to go. But I am still running into obstacles. I am thinking that I will need to pull the cross member, but did not want to unless I have to.
