Default 1988 Hardbody Stereo Issues

I have an 88 Hardbody and I put an aftermarket stereo in it. I attached the main power, ignition, and ground wires correctly. The head unit turns on and works great but i have no sound. I have two front speakers hooked up but no rears. I have no idea where to go from here. The speakers are brand new with new speaker wire. Any ideas?

You ran new speaker wire from the radio all the way to the speakers?

Double check the wiring and make sure your connections are secure and correct. The radio should have had a diagram to show which wires are for the front.

Is it a CD radio? Amp or no? What did you use for the ground for the radio?

No amp and the ground is good, i attached it to a stud coming off the firewall and i made sure there was a ground coming from the frame to the firewall. The only thing i can think of is if there is a factory amp somewhere that needs to be hooked up because that would cause there to be no sound but i was pretty positive theres no amp in these trucks but maybe im wrong.

Some were equipped with amps, although I don't know how early they had that available. But, since you ran new wire from the radio to the speakers you would have bypassed any amp. The absolute minimum you need to get a CD player to function is to provide ground, switched 12vdc, and connect a speaker. Constant 12vdc serves as memory hold. Usually, the radio won't turn on without the antenna connected because the antenna is the ground, it's also case grounded.

My suspicion is that the radio itself is defective. You've provided power and ground. You have new wire run to new speakers. You could try hooking them up to the rear channel to see if it's just the front channel that is bad.
