Default Car opinion

I've got the opportunity to pick up a 1995 Trans Am for around $4800. It's stock, the paint has some clearcoat peeling and the dashboard has a broken speaker grille. That's really the only problem with it. 53k miles, V8 with the 6 speed manual.

I know the gas mileage won't be great, but I've got the Benz (when I have it back together again) for a DD/travel car. I've been dailying the superyaris for 9.5 years, so I'm ready for something with some more power.

However, I don't need 4 flipping cars.

The Yaris has 104k on the ticker, 50k of that with the supercharger on it (not sure how that will affect overall longevity). I don't really have any idea what it's worth or how difficult it would be to sell.

I'm definitely keeping the D21 and the Benz. Can't decide if its worth just pulling the insurance off the Yaris and keeping it as a spare, or if I should sell it off.

Well, that being if you guys think this is a thing worth buying anyway. I don't really know much about GM products and know basically nothing about Trans Am except that a friend of mine had 3 of them and loved them all.

Halp. Wat do?

EDIT: Adding pictures

2009 Toyota Yaris sedan. Blitz SC - 104k miles

1986.5 D21 4x4 - 263k miles

1987 Mercedes Benz 190D Turbo - 3??k miles

Normally I'd be weird and encourage caution since it really, really sucks when one's daily driver is broken, but since you've force-inducted your Yaris you may well be no better off mechanically with it than with that TA.

If that TA has the LT1 as I expect, be aware that the Optispark distributor kind of sucks. It's mounted on the front of the engine where servicing it is a pain and it's pretty susceptible to water fouling. This is made worse by a cam-driven water pump that's above and in front of it, if the water pump sprays out through the weep hole it can affect the distributor.

My brother had a TA in this era, it was harder to work on than the size of vehicle would normally indicate. When he did a clutch getting everything aligned was basically impossible and he had to half-ass it. Managed to get it but didn't use the alignment tool.

From the perspective of usability, if you do get the Benz back together then you'll have a four-door car, so the Yaris is redundant in that sense. If you want the fun of the TA, go for it, just be mindful of modifying the car too much if you must rely on it.

i just pulled the motor on one of those transams. i would rather have a bus pass than a transam.

i myself have 4 cars....just for me. its kind of stupid. but its a truck, sedan, sports car and a compact sedan.

If i were getting rid of one it would be the compact sedan or yaris in your case. in my configuration its the least useful of the bunch and is kind of overcome by the larger sedan.

Thanks for the input guys!

TWX, that's exactly the sort of feedback I was looking for. I'm gonna talk it over with the lady tonight and see what she thinks.

SR, again thanks for some input from someone who's wrenched on one. The Yaris is definitely redundant at this point. The only reason I'm driving it right now is because I'm replacing all the brakes and the front control arms on the Benz. Once that work is done I'll go back to it for my daily. It's bigger, infinitely more comfortable, and isn't so dang loud lol. Never again will I put noisy exhaust on a vehicle.

*Shouts at 20 year old self*

Same deal here minus the sports car. I have a camry and a Corolla in addition to the D21. It's kind of cool since one is very much a 3/4 scale model of the other one mechanically. One is the nice car and the other is my everyday beater car that I don't think twice about loading the trunk with tools and driving around while I'm all dirty and greasy. But whatever. They are all old and paid for.

I used to have an 83 trans am, basic 305 with some upgrades like e-fans, headers, ram air.
The 4 speed trans was so fun and the t-tops were great, i'd love to pick another one up.

Personally I don't go for the look of that newer era trans am but in the right colors they look good. I would sell the yaris and go for the trans am for sure, no point in keeping it because you'll really never drive the thing.
6 speed is great on the highway that trans am would just be a nice cruiser and if you keep the mods down I doubt it would give you a whole lot of trouble in stock form, it doesn't sound molested by the PO.

Also on a side note I really wanna paint my truck grey like yours man haha, shit I love that color
