ive been looking around and figured most of it out. buy a crate 350 from summit racing. the one that doesnt come with intake system, ignition system, exhaust, and starter. i will buy a msd ignition set, the summit racing intake set that has 2 4bbl edlebrok carb, and headers. will run open headers until i figure out what exhaust i want to use. now i gotta decide on transmission. is there anywhere i can get a ratchet shifter?

You could swap a 5.3LS into the vehicle-to include using the factory individual coils, and GM fuel injection, for the cost of a new crate motor. The LS fits BETTER than the Gen. 1 small block because there is no distributor in the back to mess with, and the LS is shorter. It's easy (but NOT CHEAP) to build big power in the LS series of engine. Or, you can just throw a stock-ish 5.3 with a mild cam and have a super reliable truck that sounds nice, and gets good gas mileage, and is super dependable.

I have a SBC in my truck now but if I had to do it over again, it would be LS all the way. In fact, I may buy another single cab Nissan just so I can do an LS conversion.

Any way, if you decide to go with the traditional SBC, I will answer any question for you that I think I can be helpful on. I'm still in the shake down process right now, but at least I'm driving it a couple days a week. I'm running a .040" over 350 Gen. 1 SBC & 4L60E trans.

On the rear diff, you should know that *some* of the Nissan diff's are very strong. The H233B unit is supposedly pretty tough.. But not many gear ratio choices, and expensive to put a locker into it. You want something that will lock, and un-lock so the ARB air locker might be perfect for you. You can lock it whenever you decide, and it will stay that way until you decide to un-lock it. It fits what you say you are wanting to do.

LS also requires reworking the fuel system and a $$$ standalone harness if you can't DIY an OE harness (which you probably can if you can handle swapping a v8 in).

I went back and forth on GenI and Gen3/LS for a bit - the Gen1 appears 'more simple' but all the big bits are the same just without some added cost. Found a Goodwrench 350/th350 complete for super cheap so that made the decision easy.

Looking to fire it up sometime in the next 2 weeks!

I did the LS, but I went ahead and stuffed a whole Z71 into my KC 4x4. That got a little crazy, but it all worked out in the end.
