Default The D21 Road Race Truck - Chump Car here we come...

I decided to continue the "intro" thread over here with a bit more information as I try to decide what to do with this truck. The particulars of what I know about its history and the list of the pile of parts I have are all below. I have three other "purpose built" race cars right now and need to thin the herd. The truck is the current topic of discussion around the house of whether to keep or sell.

I have driven the truck at one autocross - lots of fun...would be more fun on a warm day with stickier tires. I have asked ChumpCar and they put a base value of $100 on the truck so even with the mods, I think it could be right at their $500 limit without much work. It has also been said it is legal for vintage racing though I have not pursued this - but what a hoot to be running with all the little sporty cars in the truck! At the very least, it would make a cheap fun track day vehicle to run with SCCA / NASA / ??? Club.

Regardless of what happens, I will post of the progress of the "race truck" here as it happens! And no, this is not a solicitation to sell off parts - I will keep it all or send it all as a package to a good home if it comes to that!

1993 Nissan D21 Race Truck, KA24E, 5 speed, full cage, fuel cell, NISMO front torsion bars, dearched rear springs w/spacers, "finned" shocks (Carrera?), Centerline wheels w/older Hancook 225/45R-15 tires, header, cold air intake, oil cooler, remote oil filter. Engine is allegedly built by Sunbelt" for Nissan w/higher compression and non-stock cam (specs unknown). Has locker/limited slip rear diff alleged to be 5.xx gear. Stillen air dam and fabricated aluminum bed cover, Lexan windshield 3 logbooks included with truck. Original book/build was a 1987 chassis and was raced in SCCA Coors Race Truck Challenge in 1987 & 1988 (independent). Truck was allegedly heavily damaged and "rebodied" to it's current form at some point (logbooks do not show incident). 1989 Ruan G.P. is the last Coors race. First logbook picks up again in 1995 as a Pro IT ("ITT").thru September 1996. 2nd & 3rd logbooks list the 1993 VIN and new roll cage number. I have checked to see if the old cage number is still present. 2nd logbook picks up with JUN'97 annual tech and goes thru till March of '02 (Annual Tech). 3rd logbook continues from March '02 thru November of '07. 2nd & 3rd books all appear to be Pro IT (ITT).

Truck starts, runs, drives. Motor feels strong - runs cool, no smoke/noise - I have not done a leak down test and it is assumed the motor has a good bit of race time on it. Truck weighs in at 2733 on my scales w/"some" fuel in tank. At minimum truck will need fluids changed, nut/bolt check, fresh tires and alignment check/corner weights checked before racing. Belts and window net are out of date. No fire system, just a fire bottle next to driver.

SVRA IS Another racing group I know of. Got to see some of these guys first hand a few weeks ago in Austin Texas at the Circuit of America's track. Lots of vintage datsuns were in that group.

SVRA seems to have begun the "big" vintage group and tends to be a bit more strict I the cars they accept. HSRA has a good following and tends to be a bit easier to get in and run with.

I'd run it SVRA or the like, less contact. Chump cars are more 'junk' cars which your truck clearly isn't. And from what I hear the person to talk to at SVRA is all ears about running a truck class.

Chump is actually a lot better than LeMons (in my opinion) and at least at the real road courses contact has not been too bad a problem.

Vintage has its appeal as we also have a legal club formula ford. As the truck is more a tribute/continuance of the original, I have not checked into any issues SVRA MAY have with it. HSRA probably wouldn't care. Since it is pretty period correct it may be no issue at all, just need to ask the questions.

Not totally unexpected, but SVRA says they have no place for the truck to run. Of course there are other groups, but I just happened to be inquiring about another car w/SVRA and asked about the truck as well.

I ran across this via a friend on Facebook this morning.
http://www.racewrl.com/

World Racing League - they run a "NASA like" power to weight classing system (truck would be in the lowest class) and I have to look into the appropriate sized 180 tread wear tires, but they are running at Mid Ohio this year.
