cheap is not possible haha. I have a ton of fun in mine with the stock "short travel" suspension. I think I will probably just build a hoop and upgrade the shocks. get out and have some fun in the dirt before you decide how much travel you need. I think with some bigger tires and good shocks there is a lot of fun to be had. There is a lot you have to do besides travel to get ready for dirt anyway. The only kit i have found for our trucks is advertised for $2500 before shocks if i recall correct. Maybe ask around local and find an offroad fabricator to make you a one off kit.

4x4 parts is good.

Usually a lift does nothing for suspension travel.

Yes, the suspension on the V6 2wd should be the same as the 4cyl 2wd. I have never seen lifts for the D21 specify motor.

lift kit consists of shocks/springs or spacers. for either drop or raise.
but for travel(flex) you want long arms. there are kits that bolt on...but meaning body side you bolt in a sectional bar piece for arms to bolt to. standard long arm kits for jeeps are like $500-800. prolly not much a dif for HBs.
you can always make your own.

lift kits have nothing to do what motor you have. only body and frame matter

Your options are very limited especially considering the 2wd, total chaos fabrication makes kits for the frontier but I don't know about the older hardbody. There's not much in the way of a long travel kit of there trucks even with 4wd models. Youre probably better off having something custom fabricated
