Just FYI: If you get a VG33 and send the cams in to be reground or put VG30 cams in, you're still going to need the new tappets. Those cost more than getting my cams reground.

Borrowed the bore cam from work and found this.

A VG33 is looking better and better.

JP, can you link me to the tappets you used? You did a Snider H256 regrind, correct? Hows it drive? Good low end?

I got my tappets on Rock Auto. They had Hitachi tappets at the time, which are the OEM parts. Sometimes they carry them, sometimes they do not.

We need 2 per cylinder, not 4 like my bonehead thought at first. I bought 24, but returned 12.

To find the list on Rock Auto just now, I used this search string:

"2003 nissan frontier 3.3l v6 valve lifter"

When I found the Hitachi lifters, I searched Google with the Nissan Part Number and found the Hitachi part number. Then I did another Google search using the Hitachi part number and found 5 or 6 vendors online, one of which was Rock Auto.

Looks like a little nut fell down the intake and smashed a hole in the piston corner.

Yeah, the cylinder would probably need to be bored/honed to get it smooth again.

You do one cylinder, you might as well do them all. The cost for that isn't much more.

Then we've got a new set of pistons and rings to go in. Now we are talking almost a whole rebuild on a VG30 engine.

A JDM VG33 costs less than rebuilding a VG30, though.

Its easily 300 bucks for lifters and rockers alone for a VG30.

Why did you do new lifters? Any specific reason? I don't mind it, its easily only a 45 minute job on each side.

How similar is the exhaust ports and studs? I was reading all I need to do for VG30 headers is open up the mounting holes.

If I remember right you needed to change the alternator plug too. And the xterra or frontier motor has the accessories on the proper sides. Pathy is wrong side. Tranny bolted up, same motor mounts, etc. What did you do for clutch?

I don't think it was anything like a bolt. Happened over 1000 miles after putting the plugs back in.

There was just a thread about the vg30i heater element crumbing. Do you think a chunk could have broken off and made its way into the #1 cylinder? That's nuts though (no pun intended), if it were related to the timing being off a couple teeth the damage would be closer to the center of the piston.
