Default D21 4x4 5cyl diesel...

Ok,
This might seem like the wrong way to start a project.
But I'm about to buy a 2006 rolled over xc70 Volvo with the 185hp diesel...
But I've been thinking of doing this for quite a while.
But the price of engines has been putting me off.
But now I can buy a complete and drivable but rolled xc for a VERY reasonable price.
So even thou I still haven't got the pickup, I'm buying this.
I'll have to find a 86-87 D21 4x4 later.

Anyways, here's my ideas: D21 86-87(the Swedish tax system explains why, more than 30 years old, no tax).
Double cab, 185hp/400Nm volvo diesel, 6speed with nv or np242.
Fibreglass fenders, hood, bed skins and delete any unecessesary weight.
100-200kg less weight would be great.

Welcome to Infamous!

Can't say it's my style for a project but I hope all the best for you.
Only two directions I'll ever go for an engine swap into a Hardbody is Nissan 4 cylinder or American V8.

Interested to see what the XC engine will do in the Hardbody though, if you end up going through with it, post lots of pictures

Of cause I will, pics is a given thing.
And I'm going through with this, just have to find the object.
If the xc is still available tomorrow i'll buy it.
Just missed an -87 d21, 3 days ago cause I wasn't quick enough.

Really like the D5, great sound and almost v8 torque,
With low consumption and more than 700.000km life span.

Oh boy, I really, really hope you stick around here to complete this project. I'd LOVE to see a proper diesel 4x4 build!

Small diesels are very uncommon in the USA

Nope. Cant even get a diesel in an audi unless its the SUV. For some reason people here look at diesel as dirty and unrefined and for hill billies only. Heck, a proper diesel will burn cleaner than a gas engine! I love diesel for the torque, the sounds and the redneck in me loves the black smoke.

Cant wait to see where this build goes!

You can buy audi TDI A4 and A6 as well as the VW variants. We also got the V10 diesel Touareg (although that engine is stupid expensive to work on). And there's the thousands of 4BT Cummins in box trucks out there just begging to be swapped. The new Chevy Colorado has a diesel option coming out, the new Nissan has a v8 Cummins!!!!! There's the Mercedes sourced Jeep Liberty w/ a 3.9 v6 diesel. There's also several Mercedes diesel's old and new that we can buy. They're out there you just have to look.

Most of them are just way too new to be practical to swap into these old trucks IMO.
