Dumb question, but say a 96/97 D21 V6 - is that a VG30? If so good to hear...

I've thought about doing this conversion, want to eventually go to 31" x 10" tires for offroad use...

The 1996 and 1997 did not have the V6 option. All they had was the KA24 available those years.

Canada had the vg30 in 96 in the D21. Not sure about other areas, but obdII killed the vg30 in the US in the truck and pathy. Nissan could only afford to make the Quest obdII compliant. The first Gen Quest used the vg30e until 98.

I have a 92 d21 4x4. It now has a vg30 now. My plan is to use a jdm replacement vg33. Most of the posts here seem to be geared to d21 2wd. My question is, if I get an Xterra 33 motor is the oil pan most likely hit the front differential? If I use the pan & pu tube from the vg30, can you explain what the modification would be for the oil pan? From your experience with this swap, is there an oil pan that would clear the differential. I have the ability to fabricate a new pu tube. I'd rather do that than modify an oil pan. Thanks for any help. Appreciate it very much

The VG30 oil pan will not fit on the VG33. The crank diameter is different, and the oil pan needs to seal against the crank parts.

Also, the oil pickup tube on the VG30 goes into one side of the engine to the oil pump. On the VG33, they moved the oil pump to the other side of the engine, so the oil pickup tube needs to be fabricated to go up the other side.

My guess is that a VG33 from a 4x4 would clear your 4x4 axle, but that is just a guess. And most JDM engine sellers list the engines as blocks only because they don't know what their engines have come out of. They can't tell you if it's a 4x4 engine or a 2x4 engine.

You could look for a domestic 4x4 Xterra, but it's probably going to have a lot more than 60k miles on it and it will have the low powered cams that were built for the USA.
