Default Heater Control Valve & Speedometer Gear 93 D21

Hi All,
I bought a 93 Hardbody about a year and a half ago from a friend. It has mostly been a joy. The only issues I'm having are not getting much heat when it's very cold and not being able to use the A/C for fear of overheating. I already changed the thermostat and was told that is was my heater control valve. Is this a part I can purchase on its own or do I need to by a new heater core? I haven't been able to find just the control valve for sale.

The second issue is the gear for my speedometer/Odometer/cruise control broke last year. It actually took out the almost year old transmission which was, thankfully, still under warranty by 4 days. My question is ....do they make one that isn't plastic? I don't want to go through this again and it is what happened before the transmission was replaced (by the previous owner a friend of mine) that prior year.

Thanks for any and all advice. I'm working on restoring this truck. Most of the mechanical parts are new, just need some body work and parts, then paint. I love my little red truck.

Heater core for your truck, if it is standard cab, four cylinder:

All of the speedometer gears are plastic.

If yours breaks once, well that's something that just happens.

If you replaced it once and it broke again, then something isn't quite right inside the transmission.

If something isn't right in the transmission, be glad it's a plastic part and the plastic is breaking instead of being metal and some gear snapping inside the transmission housing.

heater control valve(92240-N9600) or the core(27140-01G10), never had an issue, in my experience anyway, are you using an oem thermostat??? check the rest of the system? fan clutch, w/pump etc?
as for the speedo pinion, do you have a AT or MT?? different tooth count, unless you replace the whole pinion instead of just the gear, you may want to replace the seal & o-ring to keep the oil from traveling up the cable to the speedo head.. just a thought

jp2code, the problem is that it broke off and too out the transmission. It took out 5th gear when I was coming over the ridge from Chattanooga on the highway. I got off the road. Tried to find a back way home as I still had 4 gears, threw it in reverse and lost it all. I'm pretty sure the same thing had happened a year prior to the previous owner. I just don't want that to happen again. This transmission wan put in last October. I haven't replaced the speedo gear yet because I'm a bit worried.

YEPEE, yes, the thermostat is oem. Everything else has been checked and this is the last possible thing it can reasonably be. Mine is MT 5-speed. I will take your advice on seal and o-ring. Can't hurt to do it.

Make sure you bleed any air out of the cooling system, that can effect the heat and cooling. Also when bleeding any air out make sure to have the heat on high so the coolant flows through the heater core.

Thank you. Sadly, my hubby crashed my truck and he'll be off the road a while. Had to have the frame pulled and front end work just to get home. Of course, then, the starter died. I miss my truck, already.
