The countershaft is located inside the transmission adjacent to the mainshaft.

Is your truck a 4wd? For some reason, I only hear about the countershaft bearing failures/snapped countershafts, and "too low" oil fill plugs on 4x4 models.

Maybe the transmission case/guts are a little different than 2wd or something beyond the fact that a transfer case is bolted to it. I haven't really heard anything about 2wd models failing like that, sorry I didn't write that more clear in my first reply.

Recommended oil for both 2wd and 4wd is GL-4 without sulfides, I have heard that sulfides are bad for brass synchros.
