FWIW, I avoid all of that mess by removing the assembly at the flange. Four bolts, and lift out the whole shebang. You don't even have to disturb the rubber boot that way.

Probably the dust shield at the front of the driveshaft rubbing a little. They just push on, so they are easily knocked out of line. Easily tapped back in place when that happens.
