The tires are getting there, they've seen a rough year. Pictures always show them a little worse than they really are though.

I'm leaving the factory perch there though JUST in case I never need...

They don't want a lot of grease just a slight skim. Wet grease acts like a paste and they won't work.

it may be shot but it shouldn't be spinning while you're in 2wd, so if it is and making a racket while you drive that leads me to believe you have a stuck hub. They're known to stick

I wonder if you don't have a hub stuck engaged, do you have manual or auto hubs? I had a sticky hub once and it made a RACKET going down the road at speed because the axle was spinning on dry pavement
