I've seen broken chains in stuff ranging from 454s to bone stock 22re motors. While metals are strong fibers and some polymers can be stronger. Generally a belt is metal or fiberglass reinforced.

Yes, the brochure width on the 4x4 is wider. I'm not sure if that's wheel spacing or not. The factory wheel offset is pretty narrow with factory wheels.
