I'd have to agree. How long it lasts will depend on how diligent he is about adding oil to it. My guess is the piston rings are shot or if he's lucky the PCV valve is stuck open and it's sucking oil...

Does it change if you press the clutch in and out? Probably the throwout bearing if it does. Once it gets bad enough it'll start doing it whenever you press the clutch in.
