I used jaw puller to get mine off. There is a snap ring holding it on if I remember if correctly. You shouldn't need that much force to remove it, it's a tight fit but is really not pressed on there...

I'd have to agree. How long it lasts will depend on how diligent he is about adding oil to it. My guess is the piston rings are shot or if he's lucky the PCV valve is stuck open and it's sucking oil...
