What I mean is you may need to pull them both off at the same time. Obviously, you cant take the rotor off with the bracket around it, but...

When you added water/coolant after the t-stat, did you start the truck and let it warm up until the t-stat opened then add more water/coolant? Also, make sure the t-stat is allowing coolant to flow?

Actually, they are for the axles to the carrier. The ring gear is set by shifting the carrier left/right to the pinion. Thus the axles need to be shimmed to proper depth of the carrier.

Ok, remember back in the 80s-90s when the speed limit was 55-60 mph. RPMs were right around 3k to 3100 rpm at 60. So 3500 at 70 is normal.

Normally, its in the garage. but son's protege snapped its timing belt. he decided to replace the clutch and rear main seal as well. pulled the engine and waiting for the new flywheel.

3. Spline count changed from 31 to 33 in 99 or 00. Axle shafts are shimmed to the carrier at the axle bearing. That being said most tolerances are pretty close to each axle.
