Can't the rotor on those go on like 3 different ways? Rotate the engine to TDC #1 (use pulley mark and drinking straw/etc. to ensure that) and see if rotor is under #1 spot on the cap.

The starter in my 1998 Frontier 4-cylinder went out a dozen years ago (maybe 110K miles); since then it's had a CarQuest remanufactured starter in it, has been fine (236K now).
