Haha thanks man. It wasn't too bad. I made a bending jig out of a large piece of angle iron and a 2x4. For the smaller bends I just used a ball peen hammer.

It should be fine to leave the OEM cable in place. I have a feeling you have a bad ground cable as well. Electricity, like most things, will follow the path of least resistance.
