You can also get by with isopropal alcohol on a cotton swab if you are gentle. Soak it well, and lightly dab. Don't rub.
Done it several times on these.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but isn/t a '98 a D22 (Frontier)? Those have different arms than the D21. Those were prone to cracking on the 4x4 IIRC.
