1991 D21 4x4 Rebuild

This truck has been beat to death. I bought it a couple of weeks ago. I wanted a project and I sure as hell got one. But I've been reading and the forum been very helpful. I've working on the engine and vision the local pick a part

I found a 1991 with the same color interior and was able to get a driver's side panel. I didn't need that side but I grabbed it anyways , it looked better than the one I had on the truck. The car was hit on the drivers side door so I wasn't t able to get the passenger panel or dash out

Thanks to you guys getting direct bolt on seat was a no brainer

The drivers side seat had one position only and that was straight up. Not very comfortable. Grabbed some from a 95 Pathfinder. The drivers side had a burn mark on it and the passenger a few stains. They were 35.00 a piece

Sweeet man... yea, saw your panel in the vid, needed to be changed! Now you have another panel to play with and recover... :thumb:

Muffler was rusted out and part of it missing

The donor was all there and it pretty good shape. Luckily the donor was easy to remove. The one on the truck was rust welded on had to take a Sawzall to it. I paid 25.00 for the donor. It sounds so much better

You think I can use the old drivers side one to make a passenger side one? The truck didn't come with a passenger side panel. They're pretty tough to come bye.
I was even contemplating taking a hack saw to the crashed door to try and open it to get at the panel and dash. My dash is horrendous. It.doeant just have cracks. It has chunks missing from it.
The more i think about it the more I like the idea of the form fitted dash you lay over the existing dash

Mirror the current panel and you should have the passenger panel. I would suspect they KISS'd it back then... I suspect you can still order the clips. Find an amrrest, off anything, that you think you'll like. Get what you need for the cover and stuffing. JoAnns, or your local sewing store is good for this stuff.

Where's the truck? A yard? Ask if you can sawzall it out... they may even supply the power cord. Take your saw and a couple extra blades. Never know what you'll get into. Got demo blades? GL...

95 D21 Bumper

https://youtu.be/8Ef0LLX622E
My bumper had a big dent on one side. I found a bumper from1995 D21. Its not easy find a 30 year old bumper that isn't dented up. This one isn't perfect but it beats spending 400 to 500 for a new one. I think spent 55 dollars.
Just cleaned and spit shined it. The brackets may have been bent a little because this onerous like it sits a little higher then the last one.
I just need to find the license plate lights. I've been reading that some early model external will fit?

I gave it my best shot with a Sawzall and crowbar and still couldn't get that door open to get to that panel. I can't believe I did all that for a piece of plastic and cardboard

New tires and cleaned rims

https://youtu.be/8Ef0LLX622E
It's amazing what a set of tires and cleaning the rims changes the look of the truck. The tires are Dat1 from Walmart 72.00 each. I removed the rims and cleaned the back of the rims and wet sanded them. I probably should have painted the back of the rims because I went through the paint in some areas.
I buffed out the chrome and really brought them back to life.
I also sanded some of the surface rust on the frame and painted it

Replaced links and bushings on sway bar

Finally got rid of that clanking noise but still have a lot of suspension work to be done

LOL... yea, we human do sum stpuid things... sometimes... I've been there also...

Did you check into mirroring a good panel?

MoJo59 09-12-2021 02:43 AM

I got tired of seeing a door without a panel. I ended up grabbing a burgandy panel from a 95 from a Pathfinder same one that I got the seats from.
It was a tight fit at the mirror but it's on there.

The "center cap" looks right. It goes on before the lugs.

Need help identifying connector and vac hose

Two vacuum hoses coming out of black cannister. One connects to air filter box the other one was loose.
https://i.postimg.cc/mkBtZ8DJ/20210914-082114.jpg
I did notice there was an EGR port that didn't have a vacuum line connected does it go there?

https://i.postimg.cc/1tc3dwHH/20210914-081412.jpg
Also to the left of the black cannister there is a connector coming out of the wiring harness that looks like it was connected to something that was removed from the engine bay. Notice the two screw holes? Any help would be appreciated

Many times I've seen the cruise control in that area. (back, left side on the V6) It's also vacuum controlled.

Intake Air temp sensor

The loose connector in the engine bay was ripped off the air temp sensor under the air cleaner housing

Bed was loose

I noticed the bed bouncing around. All the bed bolts were loose especially the front drivers side corner. I tighten the bolts and a week later it was bouncing around again.

The bolt in the front corner was stripped. The bed was removed and the bed hole did not line up correctly with the frame. I presume that bolt was stripped when it was tighten.

I didn't feel like going to the junk yard so I ordered one from the dealer.
The bolt has a welded bracket at the top so it doesn't spin when you're tightening it. There is no room on top to hold it from spinning. It was 12.00.

I guess the good thing is that the fuel pump was replaced

Door panel

I installed the passenger side door panel from the 95 Pathfinder. The color and design match the only difference is the middle part of it is cloth.

Finding a matching panel in decent shape is pretty tough. But it sure beats having no panel at all.

The Pathfinder panel has more foam at the top so it was a little tougher to install especially at the mirror side. I do like the way the speaker cover is fastened to the panel compared to the hardbody

Damn... those panels look like they were made for the truck! Good job!

dvdswan 09-21-2021 07:45 PM

Looks good.

MoJo59 09-22-2021 12:25 AM

Thanks.
The next time I remove those panels would be when I put in the stereo and speakers in. But ill need to buy some new fastners. The teeth on quite a few of them are broken.

Of course thats after cv axels, tie rods, shocks, leaf springs, ball joints spark plug wires etc, etc etc.......

If I'm not careful this old girl will nickle and dime to death. But she does have to look pretty on the outside as well as the inside:)

Or you can buy an overpriced NEW vehicle. Consider this a good investment in your travels...

Yeah its fun.

I forgot to mention this girl is really old, she's stuck at 305k miles.

89'HBV6 09-22-2021 01:35 AM

We can fix that ODO! lol... 305k is just broke in!

But seriously, you're not throwing bad $ into this. She will continue to run, take care of her and you'll be a happy camper when she's rolling past others who can't...

MoJo59 09-24-2021 03:22 PM

I put lipstick on a pig

Since the paint on the truck is almost gone I decided to do a little experimenting. I washed it with an SOS pad and applied boiled linseed oil. Here's a video of the before and after

That fix is way at the bottom of the list:)

Reserector 09-24-2021 05:15 PM

Linseed oil is an interesting approach, but I have to admit, it looks alright.

rockcrawls 09-24-2021 10:59 PM

Interesting. The clear coat layer makes it a bit weird to mess with the finish on mine. I need to tackle a couple rust spots boiling though now though. I know as soon as I start messing with it, it's going to grow into a huge project because those tiny rust spots are much larger under neath.

MoJo59 09-25-2021 01:25 PM

Some say I'll have to sand to down to metal if I ever decide to paint it?

MoJo59 10-01-2021 02:52 PM

Painted the junkyard seats

I painted the Pathfinder seats with Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric paint burgandy
https://i.postimg.cc/NfgJGh0M/20210930-175504.jpgpicture upload site

The original ones were burgandy and the Pathfinders grey

https://i.postimg.cc/63W22h4d/20210829-174437.jpg

I ended up using 3 cans at 10.00 each at. You need to lay down at least 3 coats on the fabric and maybe two coats in the vinyl.

The original carpet is burgandy but I think I'm going to go with black for the replacement. Way too many shades if burgandy going on here.
