How-To: 280z water pump install on Z24i engine
 
In this write-up I will detail the removal of the factory style water pump, which is an assembly of water pump, mechanical fan clutch and belt pulley as a unit, and replacing it with the water pump for a 1978 Datsun 280z.

This is mostly necessary for those that want to eliminate the fan clutch/fan assembly and make room for Altima, or other, electric fans.

You could also use this method in order to run a separate mechanical fan clutch so you can change the fan clutch without buying the entire water pump assembly, but I am not going to detail that in this article.

All it would likely involve is a new fan clutch, a KA engine belt pulley and cooling fan but I am not certain of the fitment to the fan shroud and clearance.

I am doing the Altima cooling fan install and I will link to that write-up when it is finished.

For this install you will need to plan for removal of the radiator and hoses (highly recommended but not absolutely necessary) for maximum working room. You will be draining the engine coolant from the radiator and engine.

Here is a parts and materials list needed for this install.


Parts needed:
- 1978 280z water pump and gasket
- Fan/water pump pulley from most any late model D21 or early Frontier with the KA24E 4cyl engine.

*****The pulley from an early D21 and any Z24 engine will not work. Must be from later model KA24E engine

- New bolts for water pump (6mm by 1.00 pitch)
- New bolts for pulley
- Coolant/anti-freeze


**Note: Bolt sizes for this install are 6mmx1.0 (M6 x 1.0) flange style and two that are 8mm x 1.50.

The two 8mm bolts will be reused as they go to the alternator bracket and one just through the pump itself.

You will need three or four of the 6mm x 1.0 that are approximately 18mm long and one that is approximately 80mm or 90mm long for the water pump and four that are about 10mm long for the pulley. You don't have to buy the flange style bolt but I like them better than standard bolts. I also got four button style hex head bolts for the pulley if I like them better than the flange style. Those are the black bolts shown in the photo.

Materials needed:
- Permatex gray RTV
- Gasket scraper or putty knife
- Other necessary tools

Begin by draining the engine coolant and removing the upper and lower radiator hoses.

Replace them if they are old and rotted or swollen from oil saturation.

Remove the adjustment bracket to the alternator. This is one of the long bolts going through the water pump. Keep the bolt.

Using the 10mm wrench take out the two or three smaller bolts holding the water pump to the block. The bolts will be hard to maneuver becasue they are behind the friggin' pulley. Remove the one long bolt at the top of the water pump. This is the one that is captured and does not come out. You remove the pump assembly and this bolt remains behind the pulley.


Once all the bolts are removed tap the water pump assembly to release it and lift it out and up bringing the fan shroud out with it all at the same time.

Set this crap aside.

Clean the mating surface on the timing cover very well and get it dry of coolant and/or oil.

Using gray RTV lightly coat the gasket surface of the back of the new water pump and set the gasket in place. Let it set up for about 20 minutes before installing.


Once dry you can simply put the water pump in place and put the bolts in.

Check your pulley alignment and make sure the belt will run straight and true to the pulleys.


Mine was perfect.

That is all there is to the pump replacement. Put your belts back on and adjust your belt tension.

Now you can install whatever method of cooling fan you have chosen.

Excellent write up Dood.
May I add that stainless fasteners and anti sieze on the threads would help out too. You can also go pro and use allen head stainless fasteners...
