Overhead Console

I'm just curious as to if anyone has put an overhead console in their truck. I've been toying with the idea of trying it, but wanted too see if anyone had done it so I would have something to go by.

I know I don't want to build one from scratch. I don't have the skill nor time to do that, but I've been looking at a few from other trucks/ suv's on ebay and I think they could work with alittle modification.

Anyone have some input?

I am doing one in my 1st gen for my signal processors, but its more like and overhead electronics rack than an overhead console. I just started today so its a very rough product so far. Held in place by 8 bolt screws thru the celing frame rails. Still has to be glue sealed, primered/painted inside, and carpeted with the flase contour panels and the processor covers, as well as RCA runs, and wiring for the dome light. (not pictured).

nice so far man! how will you match the roof line?

I agree, definitely looks good. Be sure to post updates and the finished piece.

I'm just wanting something simple and OEM looking that I can put my CB in and have alittle extra storage space, maybe even put an XM radio thing in it too.

Something like this, but with the front cut out and fiberglassed to fit the CB and XM

Thanks guys, this is just the skeleton of the rack...It will look somewhat similar to the last pic belac515 posted. I am going to use 1/4 mdf for the shaping of the ceiling contour and fiberglass over grille cloth to get some rounded contours. Here are a few pics of the skeleton part test fitted to the truck. (still waiting for headliner to be delivered) When completed it will run from front to back and conceal all the RCAs and other wires needed to pass thru it....

OMG progress is so slow!
Headliner in....mounted processor rack to ceiling...... started cutting 1/4" panels to mould rack to headliner......installed dome light from an Altima w/LED bulb (SUPER bright white! Can see everything clearly at night)....measuring the OPEN area in front of the rack for sunglass holder out of an Altima...may go with map light sunglass holder from a 4th gen...went with Nismos' idea about mounting the processors opposing each other (worked out very nice)...Thank You!blah, blah, blah
Few pics of things. Still a ways away from complete Next are the flush removable panels that will "clean up" the processors, showing only the controls...after I get everything cut and fitted, I can start carpeting it.

Why crossovers in the ceiling? Seems like a lot of wires to run up there.

Also, how hard is it to mount? I was thinking about mounting up a Chevy console, but I think the only support beam is in the middle and towards the back.

Running the wires is nothing... Reason, the ONLY reason for this is access. The way my sub enclosure is made and the amp rack, there wasnt room for these without mounting them where they werent at all accessible. As far as mounting goes, its rock solid! There are 2 main supports and the front support, atleast in the frontier. I only used the middle and the rear, and it was more than enough. Had to cut the headliner in 2 places, but it made installation of the rack a breeze. I carefully drilled mounting holes in the roof braces to evenly support the weight. Its held in place by 8 lag bolts. I understand why you asked about the wires and such, and I was worried at first 2, but rcas are run up the passenger side A-pillar to the processors, and the power/grn/remote, and the data line for the CBR are run up the driver's side A-pillar. All wires are 100% hidden when all covers are installed. RCAs exit out the back and down the side of the window trim and come out right where the amp rack is. The amp rack was made to be modular...hard to explain, but the system comes apart in parts, without having to remove it all...for times like if I HAVE to carry something on a long trip that cant be in the bed. All the while, even as parts are removed, no wires are ever visible...Not even the ropes of 0awg wire. This design is why its taking forever but it will come out as I visioned it.

Updated pics...

Ok I finished this. Here are a few more pics. I ended up adding a map light/sunglass assembly from a 350Z up front for more lighting. Havent finished the flush panel covers for the processors to hide the wires and RCAs but the rack is finished.
