Engine problem

Hi , new member here. I have a 88 D21 with a factory rebuilt motor w/less than 3K mi. Came back from a short trip to the store, and as I pulled into the yard, it suddenly begin to run rough, and would die out when throttle advanced. Have since replaced cap and rotor, wires, and fuel filter . Have run carb cleaner several times thru the intake line of the carb. It will start and idle roughly, but seems to load up with excess gas and choke out immediately, when the throttle is a advanced. Any ideas?...Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the site. Did you check for codes?

You mentioned a carb. Is it carb converted? The 88 is throttle body injected from the factory. Like DVD said, check codes first and we can go from there.

Sorry, my bad, it’s injected. How do I get “codes?

do you smell fuel? wondering if you have an injector stuck, but as mentioned above check codes, it should save some time, should be "how to" at the top..

Easy to check this item with a timing light: make sure timing is correct and that timing is advancing properly.

Thanks so far for your help. I figured out how to check the codes ( YouTube) and all I got was a 55 no problem codes light pattern. It won’t start now, not even a “pop” with starting fluid. The last two times I turned it over, it would spark, just as I released the key, but not run. I’m beginning to think it’s an ignition problem, maybe needs new coils?

Have you checked the fuel pressure? {Or maybe just ran out of gas?} Also look for something clogging the air intake path. Could be many things, though, including a jumped timing set, ...
