Nissan WD21 Supercharged Pathfinder Pickup Build

1 Attachment(s)
I bought this truck from a guy I knew through work for $250. Blown head gasket and front end damage came free along with the truck. I haven't done much to it yet, started weeding through the sheet metal damage figuring out what needs to be done. This is not going to be a showroom restoration, this will be a functional off road truck with a small lift, bigger tires and a little attitude.

200k miles. Chocolate milk in the oil pan. Does still run. Coolant hose burst causing coolant to spray all over the engine bay. I am thinking of just buying a good used engine to drop in when I am ready. The rest is pretty clean.

Foul_Mouth 04-10-2018 04:10 PM

4/9/2018.
Pulled off the wadded sheet metal.

I have fenders and a hood for this. Lookin for bumper brackets and bumper but in no huge hurry, this is a ...as I have a few minutes... build. So today I went ahead and started doing a Hardbody conversion since I have all the parts already. I think it looks good so far. Nothing is permanent at time.

And that is all I have at the moment.

YEPEE 04-10-2018 04:28 PM

lookin good so far, like the possibilities

cadillacdude1975 04-11-2018 02:07 AM

Truck looks pretty solid. And this is 2018 not 17 lol

TheЯepairMan 04-11-2018 02:50 AM

Keep up the hard work!

Lol, whoops.

Thickfreakness 04-11-2018 02:34 PM

For some reason the D21 front on it just seems kind of awkward to me but more power to ya! Could be a different story though when it's all together. D21 door mirrors too? Lol

Foul_Mouth 04-11-2018 04:03 PM

Those mirrors came with it. And yes, it does look awkward till I hang the fenders back on. I think it will look good. Something different. I should have fenders on it this weekend if the weather works with me.

Just talked to a paint shop in town, $29.99 to mix up an aerosol can of paint in my color. My wallet cringed.

Thickfreakness 04-12-2018 03:25 AM

Ouch, hope it's a big can. Maybe those mirrors were optional? When I googled 'finder mirrors for my swap both styles came up

Foul_Mouth 04-12-2018 04:34 AM

I have 2 pathy's right now. A 91 sev6 and this white 92 xev6. The sev6 has the fancy power mirrors, xev6 does not.

Thickfreakness 04-12-2018 01:57 PM

Now that you mention it my coworkers 94ish se d21 has chrome power mirrors. Its bone stock

Foul_Mouth 04-12-2018 01:59 PM

Chrome and white look good together. I don't have any chrome bits floating around my stash at the moment though.

Foul_Mouth 04-12-2018 04:18 PM

Finally I can open the front doors without having to open the rear doors to do it.

New front outer door handles installed.

Looks good so far.

I did the hardbody swap on my former 94 Pathfinder, I like it because there are more options for the headlights such as the Hella's:

http://i57.tinypic.com/255t11l.jpg

dvdswan 04-13-2018 12:37 AM

looking good. be sure to check your frame in the rear for rust.

Foul_Mouth 04-13-2018 12:43 AM

It's looking decent back there. I am going to do a coat of chassis black so it stays that way for a while.

Foul_Mouth 04-13-2018 04:13 PM

Spent some more time on it today.

Finished installing the passenger door panel. Hung the drivers fender since it is still in decent shape. Also threw on a front flare so I can further realize how I want this one to look.
https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...b1&oe=5B6BFF7D
The Hardbody front fascia makes more sense now and will look really good when I am done ziptie-ing it all back together.

Ran the wire brush over the rear section of frame. It was scaly but no holes. I give the frame another couple years before there will be signs of trouble. For $250 I can't complain, it will pass inspection. I could sandblast it and it will be fine afterwards, maybe this summer. But if I leave it alone time will not be on its side.

I am still waiting for warmer weather before I start pulling down the engine.

YEPEE 04-13-2018 05:21 PM

looks like its going to be a good driver

ahardb0dy 04-13-2018 05:27 PM

did you look under the rear seats for rust? common place to find it on the Pathfinder

Foul_Mouth 04-13-2018 05:34 PM

Under the rear seats looks good...for now.

Foul_Mouth 04-17-2018 10:59 PM

Hung the right side fender and stuck a black 'NISSAN' on the door. It's looking better. Will get some pics soon.

I'd love to find a pathfinder local to daily, cool work man

Foul_Mouth 07-18-2018 04:32 PM

So new plan, I am removing the body from this Pathfinder and I am going to put a Hardbody cab on this Pathfinder frame. I'm going to do a 3 inch body lift and a 5-speed swap.

Always thought about doing this. Would be rather cool to have a factory coil sprung rear end to tool around in.
Ive seen a few Pathfinders with the sealed beam style headlights. Doesnt look bad at all. When I had my '89, I put a 93-97 bubble hood, a chrome 95 Pathy grille and corners, 96-97 chrome front bumper and then used the original valance.

Foul_Mouth 07-20-2018 12:19 AM

I may have a big donation box for you at some point david.

If mine were a 2 door i would not be doing this.

Foul_Mouth 07-27-2018 01:26 PM

The complete wire harness has been removed. Pathfinders have twice the wiring since they have things like rear door switches, amplifiers for the rear speakers, the rear hatch and all. I am going to have to go through this thing and cut out what I don't need. Truck idea is to trick the hardbody cab into thinking it's a pathfinder. Shouldn't be too tough. Lots of hours into this project yesterday.

Hardbody92 07-28-2018 07:52 AM

I’ll take the VG engine wire harness when you’re done. I want to swap my ka2.4 for a vg in my 4ba4 pickup

Foul_Mouth 07-28-2018 12:09 PM

Sorry man, i am using that harness.

Hardbody92 07-28-2018 04:14 PM

It’s cool. Thumbs up for the YouTube channel just don’t do the cheesy thumbnail cuts like all the others... just joking do what it take to get rich on JewTube.

lomofo11 08-04-2018 06:03 AM

How close are body mount locations between the two? Never thought of that swap before to be honest. I am now curious. Funny how this project started small and then snowballed into a body swap...lol! Happens to everyone. Good luck!

Really? The measurements in the front should be the same between both trucks.. they are literally the same truck as far as the front is goes. From the second body mount(area under the mirror) the wd21 is totally different

lomofo11 08-04-2018 08:05 AM

I figured the front would be close/ the same. Just curious what he'll find for the rear. It's a cool idea that I've never even thought of. I'm sure it shouldn't be that difficult to do. Just fab up new mounts in the rear to match the truck body after front is attached and it's level. So yes, really about the rear mounts. Sorry I didn't specify #92...

david29 08-04-2018 03:15 PM

Regular cab truck on a Pathfinder chassis would be a killer idea. Since they are the same wheel base, it should be doable. Bed mounts would have to be custom made. Prerunner style would look awesome.

lomofo11 08-04-2018 09:21 PM

Looks good with that tire wheel combo. What size are the tires? 31's? My father bought an '87 2dr. pathy new when they first came out in 1986. First thing he did was crank the torsion up some and threw some Centerline Outlaw 2 wheels on with 31x10.50R15 mud tires. Looked awesome. Amazing what a set of new shoes will do for looks.

Foul_Mouth 08-05-2018 01:49 AM

Those are 31s. I agree, wheels matter. Outlaw2s are nice, i have them on my red truck.

Foul_Mouth 08-09-2018 10:29 AM

Doors now hung on the donor cab.

Foul_Mouth 08-09-2018 04:12 PM

Those are hannemann bed sides.

Foul_Mouth 08-13-2018 10:31 AM

Chop chop chop!
Even though this cab is destined for the scrap pile, it does kind of resemble the idea I have in my head.

Other than some surface spots the frame is in excellent shape and will be coated with truck bedliner or POR15.

Foul_Mouth 08-17-2018 10:28 AM

Just ran a wire brush all over the rear frame, still going to blast it but for now i am doing what i can in between rains.

Foul_Mouth 08-18-2018 12:01 PM

And there you have it...

Foul_Mouth 08-25-2018 10:54 PM

A blank slate. I wire brushed it a little, degreased the front a hair and shot some sections with flat black paint just to protect it. I am hoping to sand blast it and spray it with bedliner before I move it inside for the rest of the project.

I am going to remove the intake as a whole to install complete on the used long block I have for it, this way it's as plug and play as I can get it

The PS reservoir is worth about $40 on ebay. Ive sold everyone Ive had listed the past few years.

Foul_Mouth 09-06-2018 12:48 AM

Good to know.

Foul_Mouth 09-11-2018 12:55 AM

Scrapped the engine and the rest of the body. Scrap is wayyy down. Intake manifold gaskets and oil pump showed up. Cleaned up the oil pan and pick up tube. Started putting the intake manifold back together. All while moving every thing o own into storage. 100 little steps to make one big leap.

is that a 4x4?

Foul_Mouth 09-26-2018 11:42 PM

If it was it doesn't look like it now.

So a little update on this Pathfinder project. It appears the engine blocks between the 300ZX and the Pathfinder are different. So not all vg30e engines are the same. It appears that the Pathfinder and the 300ZX share the same engine block very early on in the Pathfinders production run. By late 1986 they had already changed the block to the more modern vg30e block in the Pathfinder. The 300ZX carried on using the same block that it it had since the mid 80s. This presents a problem as I'm trying to use a 300ZX block from 1986 as the power plant for this Pathfinder. So of course the motor mounts that I have are off a later model vg30e and do not have the correct bolt holes to mount onto the 300ZX block. I went to the junkyard and inspected and early Hardbody pickup from 1986 and it did not have the correct mounts either. So I'm going to try using 300ZX engine mounts attached to the Pathfinder frame. This might work but I'm afraid it might push the engine back a few inches and if it does that's going to change my plan significantly. It is my hope that the 300ZX mounts will leave the engine in the correct position so I don't have to take any drastic measures. We'll just have to wait and see. Check out my YouTube channel I have a few videos about this project some updates and what not if you're interested. The link is in my signature.

alabama_lowlife 09-27-2018 12:10 AM

Do you have any friends that can weld you up some motor mounts?

Foul_Mouth 09-27-2018 01:05 AM

I do. I am just trying to exhaust the bolt on route as far as i can as long as it works. If not then fab time.

Foul_Mouth 09-28-2018 02:02 AM

Took advantage of 15% off site wide on ebay tonight and ordered a core support for this project. Going to need it at some point, saving money is good in my book.

Foul_Mouth 09-30-2018 02:41 PM

Going to try the zx brackets and mounts attached to the pathfinder frame mounts. We'll see.

Foul_Mouth 10-03-2018 11:50 AM

Had a 15% coupon for ebay so i snagged a radiator core support. Also should have a test engine mount i grabbed off ebay as well today. Little bits at a time.

Towing the frame to my buddies shop today where it will meet the cab for the first time. Also might have a steel deck for it as well. I am looking at houses left and right. Hoping to find something soon.

Hardbody92 11-08-2018 02:24 AM

Good luck man. Gonna be a sweet build

Foul_Mouth 11-09-2018 12:54 PM

Frame is safe and secure inside my friends shop. One of the easier things I have had to move in my lifetime. They are so much lighter with no body on them. I took next week off to take care of a few things and while I am at it I am going to spend a day sanding and another painting so it looks good before setting the cab on. This will be a high speed mockup just so I can stay focused. Pics soon.

Foul_Mouth 11-18-2018 04:30 PM

The body is on!!!! It looks killer and I can't wait to get back on this right away.

In all her glory here's my vision slowly being fleshed out. The internet was correct for a change, the hardbody reg cab shares the same body mounts as the wd21 pathfinder. Looking forward to working on this beast again in 2 weeks.

Always wondered how taking a single cab and mounting it on a Pathy chassis would work. Especially in the 4x4 category. Better flex from the coil sprung rear for starters. Had a vision of this at one time. Just couldnt pull the trigger. Parts were too valuable not to sell at the time.

Foul_Mouth 11-20-2018 01:58 PM

Up here i have no parts market and once i shipped i never made any money so i just use what i got to make things like this, it's like free mobile parts storage for me, i drive my inventory around town. Lol!

Foul_Mouth 11-21-2018 12:50 AM

So it seems non of the early pics are loading. I will have to look into that.

Foul_Mouth 12-07-2018 12:23 AM

Bolted the cab down last weekend. Since i didn't have the right length bolts for the rear i ended up drilling all the way through the floor and running carriage bolts. Turned out well, cab is solid.

Next i cut and flared one brake line. When i cut off the pathy body i kept all the lines intact, except one. Now i have full brakes.

Next time i am out i would like to start running the wiring. At least the front half so i can button up the dash and steering.

Updates soon.

h.stickeye 12-07-2018 05:32 AM

this is gonna be unreal.

Foul_Mouth 12-16-2018 03:20 PM

Tilt steering and extended steering shaft done.
Harness started to be run.
Hvac installed.
Busy night.

Hardbody92 12-19-2018 03:18 AM

I saw a 1990 single cab d21 with a tilt wheel at the yard couple weeks ago. It seemed factory, that truck was a beater nothing special

Foul_Mouth 12-19-2018 01:07 PM

Odd. Never ran into a single with tilt before. That means they are out there it seems.

Nissan made single SE trucks so it would have the tilt wheel. Or someone could have changed it out. Itís a simple bolt of in modification.

Foul_Mouth 12-23-2018 06:47 PM

It is pretty simple to add, just swap columns and done.

Dash board installed. It was a 2.5 hour process and had to cime out a couple of times for fitting analysis but it's in there and all bolted down. Ran out of time to continue.

No pic but i replaced the clutch and brake pedal pads with traction tape. The rubber pads were pretty trashed.

Still have many homeless connectors i need to address but that will be for a later date. My next area of focus will be the speedo cable, this way i can finish installing the gauges and the rest of the interior.

Always take reference pictures!!!

The plan is to source a good used 3.3l and shove that in there. The pan on that should clear but if not I have a spare 4wd pan.

YEPEE 01-02-2019 08:34 PM

and pick up tube

Foul_Mouth 01-02-2019 11:47 PM

Got that. I saved those bits off the blown 3.0 that came in the pathfinder. The 300zx motor i started converting was proving to be too much of a pain to swap over so i ditched the idea. Once i close on my new house and i have a new budget under control i will seek out a good used vg33 to drop in this truck. Until then i will work on everything else on the truck i can.
