VG33 Swap, All you need to know

Ok gents, As most of you are aware I have been doing a build log of my VG33 swap on my 92. Well, I figure since everyone that has done this swap before did major mods to their ecu and intake to make the VG33 intake work. My list, or rather short run down is how to make this swap as bolt in as possible. So, none of this :weld: but all of this :woot:.

#1 Engine: Learn from my mistake, buy the Xterra engine and use it's braketry. It uses a 3 multi V belt setup that places all the accessories close to where they are on the D21 VG. Bonus: Quest Alt. is a 100% bolt on affair. :dathumb:

#2 Oil Pump/pan: Use the Quest oil pump from the VG33 Quest, Use the Pickup tube and pan from the D21. The filter housing from the Xterra will work with the Quest pump which may or may not have the same filter housing. Either way the alternator will stay in the same location. Edit: I am using the 97 Pathy oil pan and Pickup. VG30e pumps(except Quest) are the same and the VG33 pumps are the same. Pan/pickup tube from the VG30 will have to be modified to be used on the VG33 pump
EDIT2: If you are doing this swap on a 4x4 Use the D22(XTerra/Fronty) pump and Pickup tube with the stock D21 4x4 pan. 2wd guys we're still up a creek as the D22 pans are both setup as 4x4.

#3 Mounts: The D21 mounts bolt right in lol that easy.

#4 Intake: Now, this is where it gets kind of tedious. To make this swap as painless use what you have already IE: VG30I use the I intake. This makes your new 33 work with your Current ECU.

Note: KA Guys If you were to do this follow all these steps but use the Intake you desire because once you get the intake and mounts it's basically a KA to VG30 swap in terms of parts.

#5 Exhaust: This is the fun part. As I have just learned tonight, they changed the stud location slightly so the studs nearest the fire wall don't line up quite right. But, patience and a drill make quick work of this issue.

#6 Drivetrain: The Transmissions are the same bolt pattern. So they will all bolt up to the motor. (W)D21 VG Transmission's are usable with the VG33.

#7 Cooling: Ok, so after assembling the motor in the bay I noticed I couldnt get the proper lower rad hose for the Xterra so I switched to the 97 Pathy hose and cut it down a little bit (~4-5 inches). If you try to use the Xterra Setup double check the pipe side of the hose as it is 1/4" bigger than the Rad side on all the SOHC VG engine setups and for some reason the Xterra ones around me were all 1.25" on both ends.

Honorable mention notes: Use the stock starter from the D21, Flywheel and Clutch are bolt on.

Follow these instructions and your swap should go painlessly. Please learn from my pain and trials. Pics will be added soon.

Hopefully this will become a sticky.

Woot My very own Sticky. :woot: Thank you.

I'm doing a VG-i swap to a VG-E swap and I have the ENTIRE motor and wiring and all that, any tips on getting the engine out and in fast?

fbccars924 01-16-2015 04:12 AM

Unfortunately, no lol I took my time with this one for 2 reasons, A. this is my first swap B. 2wd VG33 d21 swaps are largely undocumented. The only tip I can give you is pull the Motor on the VG-E before the intake because they are a pita to get off with a firewall in the way.

That was the plan. xD

So did you use a 2nd xterra trans or the d21 trans? I take it you just used the wiring harness and ecu from the xterra?

fbccars924 01-16-2015 04:42 PM

I'm using the D21 Trans. Externally, the vg33 and vg30 blocks are the same.

He's even using the ECU and the wiring from a VG30, I believe.

Everything is VG30 above the heads. ECU is Stock 92 D21. Eventually after the truck is a permanent project and not a Part time daily I will go to an Xterra Wiring harness and ECU.

For my 2wd friends, The oil pan situation is a little muddy. I am using the Pathy pan and pickup tube until I find a suitable way to make the VG30 pan work. I am content with using the Pathy pan simply because I won't be lowering the truck in the near future. It seems that the oil pan will be modified whether I like it or not. But, I will try to keep the mods/fabrication to a minimum.
