Idler Arm and Steering Gear
I took my 1994 truck (2WD, VG30E V6) in to get an alignment, but I was told I couldn't get an alignment due to these bad upper and lower ball joints.

While replacing all the ball joints (upper and lower), I replaced the old wheel bearings and seals, calipers and rotors, and installed new brake pads.

Now, I am told the Idler Arm is bad and needs replacing before they can do an alignment.

On Courtesy Parts, page 485 Steering Linkage shows several parts, but nothing called an Idler Arm.

Part 48530 - Hardbody Truck IDLER ASSY-STEERING is my best guess, but I want to confirm.

Does anyone know a good MOOG part number for the Idler Arm? What other parts need to be replaced while I am doing this?

Also, the old Steering Gear is leaking. It isn't bad, but the bolt on the bottom of it is always wet with Power Steering Fluid.

Has anyone here replaced the Steering Gear? I want to know if it is a good idea to replace this steering gear while I've got the Idler Arm pulled off, and I'd like to know what other (seals, gaskets, parts, etc.) should be replaced while doing this.

Does anyone have any good pointers I should know about ahead of time?

i have the same problem. they told me that i should replace my ball joints cuase they wiggle when i yank on the tires. i went to another soot and they told me they couldnt align it because my steering wheel has to much freeplay. so now im told i have to rebuild the steering cylinder looking thing. im guessing its the steering gear.i also know i have bad control arm bushhings. what should i do?

u r actuallu right that is the correct arm but there should be no reason to replaceit unless its wornout or stripped from somewhere.

jack up, move tires up and down for upper and lower ball joints, bearings
move left to right to see if you have play in centerlink inner and outer tie rods.

48502 (attached to the steering box) would be the pitman arm right? the idler arm is on the passenger side frame rail.

Most likely only the bushings are worn out. The bushings are replaceable and cost below $10 each for OEM or aftermarket but....... if you really want to spruce up your steering you can upgrade the bushings to Bandit4x4 brass bushings which is what I have on my 1995. Here's a link...

Will work on 2wd Hardbody trucks. I have them on mine. Just grease them up before installing. They are designed for heavier off-roading which means they are overkill for street trucks. It's a really good mod and cleaned up a lot of slop and wander my truck had.

Just something to think about.

48530 is correct but look at 48533 instead.

OK, so I cheated and got a Steering Gear with an Idler Arm attached to it:

The description says it fits my truck, so it had better or I'm going after eBay.

Anything I should know ahead of time? Is swapping out this Steering Gear a simple bolt on type of process? Like, do I need to bleed the steering fluid somehow afterwards?

When the arm is on the steering gear it is called a pitman arm. The idler arm is on the passenger side. Just an FYI. Pitman arms don't usually go bad unless they weren't torqued properly.
