ok i put this motor in my truck "2.4" the same type that came out it ran good for like six months then it started it would be hard to start if it was cold or hot sputering and pushing black smoke out the tale pipe did a diag. on it from the ecu and the code was a bad ecu got a new one now it will run good it seems like but only if the air filter is off "the truck is a 1992 hardbody d21 2.4l manual trans"

Bad Coolant Temp Sensor. Either that or someone has broken the Intake Air Temp Sensor wire.

could that be all some one told me that there is a low spot in the main harness and it might have got water in it and shorted something out could that be a prob.

Yeah, coolant temp sensor has a lot to do with how these motors run, mine did the same thing.

do you think it might be the MAF? (mass air flow sensor)

^ or bad maf gound, or bad connection to maf signal wire both can be check with a volt meter. I would do both ways to be safe, voltage reading for the signal at the ecu and at the maf connector under the hood.

my trucks doin the same thing, i put my motor in about 8 months ago. mine acts like its hard to turnover when its hot, when its not hot its fine, i tried new sarter, batt., solonoid, starter wire, maf sensor, starter relay, all new grounds, so i can tell you none of that works and save you some money. i recently had a guy tell me about a "idunremember whathecalledit sensor" on drivers side of the engine bay on wheel well if you still have one, its a little grey box 1"x1.5" with some wires in it he said that should fix it.

and be done with it
:rofl2: no such thing dude, especially when you drop a 350 in it.

this may be of no help at all but is ur filter dirty.....sorry had to ask.....clean the throttle body or it could be air temp sensor....for some reason when u add restriction to the intake is whenn the problem occurs ....it is quite the kanundrum (sp)....
