It's not a nissan, I know, shame on me...but here it is anyways in a nutshell.
I got the truck from my grandma's back yard for free, wanted it for years until finally we were able to switch the title to my name cuz my some bankruptcy issues in my extended family. So here goes nothing.
Oh, Tony at Fe02 fab built the frame, I don't recommend him at all...long story...but basically it's pretty good solid work but it took twice as long as was stated, and he didnt do a few things as I asked, which ended up not as cleanly done as it should have been but still strong. ANYWAYS
he built this.

i modeled everything within an 1/8 inch to spec (like a 1/16 each side) and had all this round bar tubing caging in the gas tank and mounting the air tanks and shit, and got the square. it's clean, but it's not amazing. The plan was to have tubing, but not overly done like a lot of rides. I wanted it to be functional, not just cosmetic. either way, i'm stoked to be at the point i am...but the truck fights back when I do work on it. Just gotta get over it.

Whats wrong with the fuel and tank setup? Looks solid to me. Keep us posted this looks to be a sic build.
GrantH
02-17-2010, 09:36 PM
nothing is "wrong", but i had it drawn up with round tubing caging in the fuel tank, and having the tanks mount to the round tubing. instead 1x2 was used and nothing is seen when looking from lower down behind the truck. nothing major is "wrong" with it. i'm just being picky.

it's rough this semester, but it happens. hopefully it will all be worth it. the truck should be primed within the next month. got a couple things i need to finish "building" and then it will get primer, and hopefully I can test my color combo for interior as well.

you have an idea of monetary value if its up to par? we have purty similar situations (another reason i thought id give ya firsties) so i know ya might not could do much but ya also know i need the could use the return investment on what im not gonna use:o

honestly dude, i just sent my truck to get shaved ($150) so i'm broke right now plus my dog just passed...so i'm looking for a puppy to buy. Money is super tight right now but if you are just gonig to hold on to it, I may be able to grab it sometime late summer (my bday is in august).
I will say that a buddy of mine got a bed for 200 with a gate off a newer truck in a JY...so that's really all i'd be willing to pay if not a touch less. I hate to be "cheap" but I also don't NEED it...just want it. If that sounds fair and you are just holding on to it....we'll talk a little later.

This one is not going anywhere :). I drove it for ~40 miles today and absolutely loved it. First time I've driven it a solid distance since the frame was built. I just need a bake booster and i'll be golden.

We shaved the doors like this so I could use a little bit of filler to shape the door rather than worry about if the metal was perfectly contoured. It' shouldn't take too much filler.

well, i met a kid here in town that is building a yota like mine but ended up buyig a 4wd bed for his build. His truck had a nice bed with little bondo/rust and we worked out a deal, so i headed home with a new bed.

the side panel inserts that bolt onto the side of the bed rail lip is something I plan on keeping. It may have to be chopped up or even rebuilt....but they will be back in the bed.

GrantH

the front and rear give hardly any flare for 2wd. 4wd gives a bit, maybe an inch or so?

i really don't know, it's enough to justify buying them. and actually just last night i found out that they DID actually make 4x4 japanese beds for my truck and now i wish i had one of them too haha. I can just graft the flares on at some point and buy front fenders.

what a shame. you pay some one, that's supposed to be a processional your hard earned money, and they fuck it up.
it was a trade + cash on my end. i've only got 600 in something that could have cost 2 grand or so...but I still have to fix it.
I'm moving on past the bed for now onto my brakes because if all things go as planned I want to make the trip to Tunica for Showfest come May and not have to trailer it.
I picked up some new brake mounts for the frame side of the soft lines and some new soft lines. If that doesn't fix the problem I will be getting ANOTHER (my 3rd or 4th replacement) Master Cylinder, hopefully that will fix it.
I really want to do a brake upgrade, mainly calipers. I'd like to do either supra turbo calipers, or cobra maybe...but I really need to read up on the issue and see if it can even be done with my stock rotors (but upgraded to drilled/slotted).

well, not much has been done. The brakes still leak at the MC, I have no idea what to try next to stop that. I believe I need a new reservoir, but the rest I don't know wtf to do haha. I put the damn thing in a vice and cranked all the banjo bolts and what not down with no luck.
Aside from that, I got my fan switch installed so it's now officially temp controlled like it should have been from the beginning. I'm sure i'll take it out and put it back in mulitple times from now on, as I can't figure how to wire it cleanly.

While a few things seemingly can't be fixed (haha) I did order me up some materials for upper arms that a buddy out in AZ is going to be building me. (Thanks!) My buddy Tweeter in town will be doing the PC on them and hopefully I can pull a LITTLE bit of camber out of them but I won't push that too much. I'd like a little more.

these things are a pretty neat color, still trying to decide if I like it or not though. in anything but bright sunlight, they look purple as fuck. in sunlight, they turn a deep blue that is an awesome shade of blue (sorta like the pic). heres another one for the books.
I went to fill my tank with some gas as it ran out when messing with things (its still in the garage) and noticed that my filler neck was leaking. Come to find out, its leaking badly. The guy (Jason Sutton of Meridian/Energy, Mississippi) that built my bed cut/welded the metal turndown that comes off the stock gas door pocket and apparently doesn't know wtf he is doing because the welds just let gas gush through. I was hoping it was just the hose wasn't clamped (which it wasn't) but a hose clamp didn't do much of anything.
Now I need to find out either A)how to fix whats there, B)how to afford a fuel cell, or C)how to run some other kind of fuel tank in the bed somewhere.

i dont have cash for a fuel cell atm, but it's the next major thing on the list. promise.
i posted on my facebook a picture of it when i first got it back from having the frame built, and that was may 29,2009 and that part of the build took about 8 months or so and i drove it for a long time before that...maybe 6 months or so before that. i'd say 2.5-3 years roughly ive been building it.

yah, i love bright colors and paint jobs from the early 90's! thats when minitruckin was at its prime IMO. so much creativity went into trucks back then. i think all the stripes will touch each other when its done in real life, like the yellow will follow the curve of the pink and then when the 3 stripes merge at the back, they will all touch each other and have some pinstriping seperating them maybe.

its the passenger side dash pad from an 84-88 (toyota) stripped to the metal frame with 2 part urethane "pour foam" on it. you pour it on, it expands, you sand it down, lay a layer or two of glass cloth over and resin it down real good and then sand it a little and cover it in tweed or paint it. whichever. never done it before, but we shall see what happens!
GrantH
05-22-2011, 01:21 PM
this is just a rough 5 minute sand with 180 or so on the DA. you have to be careful...it can cut in the foam fairly easy.

so i pulled the bed, cut out my filler neck that was hacked and leaking...obviously undercoated the bed so it wouldn't rust, and have since installed my driver side control arms.
that being said, they not only didnt fix my problem (hitting the wheel at full lift) they actually made it worse (rub on wheel non stop). this is noones fault, my offset and size wheel just will not work on a toyota thats bagged and bodied like mine is a i guess. ive done everything i know to do.
the arms hit the wheel, the poly bushing on the front of the arm rubs the slightest bit (not worried about it) and it hits my brake splitter now lol. of course. i can fix that with new lines if i have to, and i may be able to just move it outta the way or something with a little force/pushing on it.
i need 17's basically.
it may not hit the brake thing when layed out, i just jacked up the wheel/tire as far as it would go. we'll see if i go that far.

didnt get 17's to work, we couldn't find the lug key. i think im going to just order some more drop spindles and put them on. that will drop the balljoint in relation to the rim, and I can dial in where it hits the brake splitter block with a spacer of some sort.

So what kind of prep is necessary to have the foam stick? Also would using great stuff foam in a can work the same way? Thinking about trying this method with some of the smaller pieces in my interior.
GrantH
05-29-2011, 06:47 PM
i just put it on the bare metal, didnt sand or anything but its also come through the holes in the piece as well for a bit more physical bond. great stuff sucks, not near the same quality as this stuff. smaller stuff could be done with fiberglass or ABS plastic and plastic epoxy glue like duramix 4048 or similar depending on the pieces.

Been in North Carolina for a month since my last post. Good trip for me, not so sure about for the truck. I've lost interest completely.
First 5k or so takes it. I won't miss it at all. I've all but moved on I believe. I may slit my wrist later over it, but i've other shit I want to do.
I'll probably work on it if it ever gets under 100 degrees heat index...so like 70 degrees normal. It needs a balljoint that cost 12 bucks, and the dash finished, and primer. Like 10 hours of work. Just not down to do it anymore haha.
Trying to move to Denver around January/March timespan and not so sure the truck is going with me whether it's sold or not.

I'm just not motivated by the build anymore at the moment. Maybe in 6 months I will be but at the moment I just want out of this hell hole they call Mississippi and the truck will take money away from that. If we land a decent place with a garage that the truck can go in...I may pay for the shipping but who knows.
I appreciate you following the build, same to anyone else who did. Maybe it will get finished out of shear fuck-it-ness one weekend but i'm not really planning on it. Didn't go to a single show this year lol.
GrantH
10-15-2011, 09:34 PM
So...I may be back at this. Just maybe.
I have an interview Tuesday. If that goes well and I land a job, i'll be moving about 3 hours away to the west and i'll have my own place. If that happens, the Toyota will come with me and I will probably end up working on different things about it. I'm crossing my fingers.
I plan to buy a pistol first and foremost. Probaly a Ruger LC9 or S&W 642. Then the truck will see some money/parts. I'll also have to either sell or trade my welder to get a 110 model rather than a 220.
I bought a new Brake Master just now, I hope this one works. I have been through 4 of them so far. If this one works, the next thing I get will be a new lower BJ, new calipers, and rotors for the front.
We'll just see how things go from here.

Well, me and Mat finally caught up with each other between work and things look like they will probably move ahead pretty quick here. I'm in need a car hauler/trailer for the Yota. While I think I could drive it...I'd rather not.
Looks like it is going to Ice this month.

Sourced a trailer, I think it will follow through. I'll be ordering stuff in a bout a week.
