did a bit of work on it lately (havent in 6 months) and it kinda reminded me i was gonna re-do the old build topic from nc.
dont expect alot of progress, this is just a "nothing to do tonight" project. with a "as low as possible" budget. its also a way for some friends to learn and practice some things like bodywork/bags etc, that have never done it before.
so from the begining.
bought this farm truck 620. he said it ran 5yrs ago but the fuel pump went. he bought a new one but never installed it. i gave him $200 of the $300 he wanted, and told him i will give him the rest when he finds the fuel pump.....................i saw it sitting in the bed along with the pile of garbage that he said "too bad, the garbage goes with the truck".....haha

first thing was teardown
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/237.jpg
took us an entire evening just to get the bed off.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/261.jpg
then just kept cutting off random stuff we didnt need

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/283.jpg
finally found a cheap set of big tires for the rear. 33s!!!!!
we had to do a second pie cut to make it lay on these.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/287.jpg
and made them into whites too.(i dont recomend doing this to a highway driven vehicle)

then grill decisions.
we are going with the 36....as soon as we find a rad..... some asshole stole it from my backyard.

I never knew you could grind on a tire and turn it white, lol!!! Learn somethin new everyday. Thats gonna be one kool little rod, broheim! As soon as I saw your drawing, it reminded me of a sketch I saw from Nick Crouch over at Surface. Lowbuck builds can be so much fun because there's no budget or theme restraints.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/236-1.jpg
this was taken in the fall one night by a photographer friend(d bohun) who was learning how to weld that night. he took this straight from the camera!!no photoshop!!
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/Dethtrp1.jpg
then we decided we didnt like the gap between the cab and rear wheels, we didnt like the idea of moving the cab back. so we came up with this............
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/011.jpg
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/012.jpg
32"out of the sides. 20" out of the width
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/015.jpg
it still needs about a 12"b/d. and to be fully welded.
and the blue tape lines are the layout for the 4"chop(thats the most we can do and still fit). we are chopping around the rear glass, so it sits flush with the belt line.
finshed welding the bed (still needs to be b/d)
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/020.jpg
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/021.jpg
so i guess this is the first flareside datsun too!!
and that takes us up to today. wont see to much till spring. this is how it looks today

Have you thought of narrowing the rear frame rails so the bed sides sit between the frame and tires?

thanx guys, this will be very slow moving. its more about having some beers and fucking around (learning for some). than actually doing something "nice". i have too many "nice projects", i really enjoy not giving a fuck about warped steel and scratched paint on this one.

grinding whites is an old rodder trick, deffinetly not the safest mod, but it does work on any tire with white lettering.
nick crouch's rendering was more "high end mini-rod". but this is along the same lines.
and im not sure if bomb-ass-poop, is good?? but ive been painting for 12+yrs. and that is deffinetly not my usual style.(im more a 3d guy)
cool!!!!

thanx, the whole point was to have the rear tires the farthest point on the truck.

the bed will sit in line with the cab, it just need a big body drop first. it was just set there in the pic to see if it fit between the tires. once bodydropped, it should only be about 6" deep.
cool project, that shot of it your buddy took is killer.

made some progress on the chop yesterday!!!
we ar doing a 4" chop with a "stepped chop" in the rear to retain the factory rear glass.
first up was cutting the glass................with a zipcut on an angle grinder. it works!! we were all baffled. it didnt crack it at all, all of the cracks in the glass were there before, and didnt get any worse when we did it.

back in place, it will still need some pie cuts on the b-pillar to get them to line up perfect.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/0203.jpg
we will still need to do alot of panel alignment on the roof and build some filler strips( i have an extra 620 roof to make fillers from), do the door frames(they were just quickly cut off for now) and maybe re-skin the roof.

Well i'm a ratsun guy and i love it! I don't think this will offend to much, that truck was pretty rusty to begin with. No matter how much you cut up that truck i still feel he saved it. I'm sure you have scrap metalheads in Canada. These guys down here in the south will scrap anything, whether they own it or not! There was a 521 pickup on ratsun once, shortened rear like yours, Chopped top {roadster}. i tried searching for it, but no luck. It was pretty sweet, but i think this one will turn out better. ^^ oh I did, I'm really surprised it hasn't ended up over there yet. They HATE the other traditional rod styled one.
Can't wait to see more.
haha thanx guys, i do lurk on ratsun every now and then, but ive never signed up.
feel free to post pics of it on ratsun if you'd like, i really dont care if some people dont like it, the truck wasnt a "perfectly good truck" and was so fargone that it was 1 step from scrap as far as im concerned. im giving it a second life that never would have happened had i not dragged it out of the bush. and any of the useable parts that we arent using went to a friend that has a "nice" 620, for spare parts.;)
we are gonna try and keep it "traditional japanese ratrod" lol, if there was such a thing.:p we are gonna try avoid using anything "american" for parts on it. even the roof skin we are gonna use is from a mazda. the only thing so far is the grill. because we couldnt come up with anything better. we were toying with the idea of the "shop logo" thing on the door the other day, and came up with the idea of doing some sort of faded rising sun and some jap lettering on the doors.

This is just a thought; have you ever considered finding another bed and using the rear bed corners and tailgate to continue the body lines on the back wall of the cab and round out the cab corners?

the bed corners are a compound curve so it wouldnt work unless the cab went back another couple inches, and they also would leave out the most difficult part, the "bullet" bodyline, which would be next to impossible (for me anyway).
but we have talked about the idea of shaving the ridges out of the rear cab where it is exposed.

Some fun stuff happening in this build man! I dig the rear view for sure!
I messed with this idea in Photoshop on a 521 pickup a few years back. I could get it to look nice in a side view but the 3/4 view is the one that is hard to get right I think.
Something about the way the firewall/cowl doesn't taper to the grill. I wonder if you pinched what is left of your front fenders in a bit if that would help? You have me curious how it will come out!
(Course this would also look swell with a straight axle up front!)
Anyway kudos to you for trying this!

cool little shop.
ya, the front fender/firewall has had us guessing for awile. we specifically cut the fenders the way we did hoping to bend them in. but when we bend them they flex funny and dont flow well, so i think its gonna take some creative pie cuts etc to make it work.

as usual progress is very slow. especially now with a newborn daughter.:D
got the seats test fit. we're still not sure if we wanna make proper mounts, or just weld them to the floor.

got the new shift knob painted.

got most of the top welded up. all of the fillers strips are in, we just got to get the new skin welded up. (its just sitting there in the pics.)

well we havent touched this thing since october. but i made some room in the garage yesterday, so we pushed it in and did some brainstorming on whats next.
weve now decided to ditch the 36 ford grill. not only is it to tall, its also the only "american" thing on the truck, and we didnt like that. so now we are gonna make a grill shell using the stock hood, and section the factory front bumper down. hopefully i will get some pics up soon.

got alot done in the last few weeks now thats ive got some room for it in the garage.:nana1:
we flipped the stock bumper upside down and sectioned it narrower.
got the rad mounted, then we cut the hood up and made a "grill shell". its only tacked together for now. it conects to the firewall with some round rod for support, and will have some more mounts at the frame section so it can be easily removed to access the rad.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/0133.jpg
the bonus is the "sportruck" sticker still remains.:)
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/0062.jpg
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/0113.jpg
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i315/dekay24/deathtrap%20build/0082.jpg
so for i think its coming along alot better than i imagined, weve never seen anyone make a hood into a grill shell before. and am actually pretty happy with how it flows so far.:)
up next is a valance filler between the bumper and rad, then make a grill.
weve got another original idea for that aswell.:D

thanx guys.
the next little while will be spent doing the not so showy stuff. like building proper bed mounts, finish welding up the grill shell, finishing up the welds on the chop, and other little things that need to be fully completed.
and no, there will never be a motor swap on this thing, a weber carb will be the most we will do. we are trying to keep this all japanese. and in reality we could care less how fast it is.

Reading this thread has been bittersweet for me...
I just acquired a 1991 HB shell and had similar plans and thought I was being original. I was but just found out someone else had such a badass idea too. On a positive note, reading through your build has helped me get ideas for mine(such as how to pie notch the frame instead of C/V/U notching over the rear axle and appropriate all-weather chairs) but we have already got differences between the two plans.
I am running mine with no bed, permanent vert, 12A engine/tranny, no real interior, static dropped from hell, and 14" Dodge D50 wheels with 185's up front and 225's out back.
Definitively addicted to your build. Can't wait for it to be on the road.

weve actually made alot of progress over the last few weeks, but its all been the "not so exciting in pictures" type progress.
bed has proper bed mounts, rad shell has more permanent mounts, driveshaft tunnel is cut, and driveshaft has been measured out and ready for shortening and to be made 1pc. the front suspension is also finished and at its permanent ride height (static).
