I'm going to put some Denali wheels on my truck tonight. I know that the center bore needs to be 4". My question is how deep do I need to go?

1/2 inch

i assume you are talking about the 17" denali?

if so, depth isnt that important. you can go all the way through if you want. the center cap attaches to the wheel, and not the center bore.

just be careful, the center bore has a taper and your bit will try to ride it and slowly cut the hole larger than 4".

Here is the bit I'm going to get to do it with. Is this the one I need and do I need anything else other than the router?

thats the right bit, but the router method isnt the best way to do denali wheels. i speak from experience.

I would like to take them to a machine shop but my buddy wants to trade me for my wheels and neither of us have an extra set of wheels.

That is the same bit that I used and it worked out fine, I have used the bit to do 2 sets of wheels up to this point. Just take it slow and only go small amounts on cutting the depth. Make a pass. Adjust the depth make another pass and repete. I done it in 4 passes per wheel to be safe...

Yes you want to be careful i used that bit and once the bearing rode the lip on a titan rim it ground it too far :( i lost one rim because of it and now looking for another. I have since machined the router bit and made the bearing sit closer to the body hope it fixed my problem now. (my new titans im not cutting at all i took off my hubs and machined them for a 3in center so now i never have to cut wheels again):D

Yeah, go slow---- and also, check the allen-bolt that holds the bearing in. It came off on my second pass and the router gouged an extra 1/4" through the side!!! I made a big stink at Osh and they gave me a new, sharp bit- even though I found the bearing and couldve kept goin ( I wanted a sharp bit!! haha)

Correct me if im wrong but when you balance a wheel it uses the center bore to ensure its true. So how can you enusre your router is cutting true. to me i took my wheels to a machine shop and for the 100 bucks they charged me it was well worth it.

The bearing riding the rim where it is not being cut is what makes it cut true.

u need the bit that u showed us, and a flush trim bit with the bearing on top!
once u are done with the rabbeting bit and have gone as far as u can go without riding the lip, then switch over to the flush trim but, ur gonna have to do it all at one depth but u just gotta maneuver the router so u only cut a little bit at a time. ive done three sets of eskies this way, all gm wheels have that gay ridge on the wheel.

it doesnt even matter if your center hole is perfectly true or not cause most of these factory gm wheels are lug centric not hub centric...

go to youtubes HOW TWOS and jus get an idea how its done. i di my titans with a dremel it wasn't the best job but who gonna see it. and the back rims i didn't even touch them jus got some 1/4 spacer and it was good. BTW how much does a machine shop charge. here in Hawaii i called a shop andthey wanted $175 per rim thats when the dremel came out :rofl2::rofl2:

i used the hole saw method when i did my denalis. I went to lowes and bought a 3 inch and a 4 inch hole saw. I had to rig up some spacers so the 3 inch hole saw would stick out far enough so it would guide the 4 inch hole saw. It worked great for me. Stratusrt01 has the wheels on his truck and doesnt have any problems with them.

heard about that. no one seems to do it, but whatever works right? so do you go ALL the way through the wheel? is this only good for wheels with a cover on the front?

It does matter if the center hole is centered and drilled right. Becasue the tire is ballanced using the center hole, if it was fucked up then the wheel would not balance right.

True if the hole was damaged during the boring process, but if so that's no big deal any reputable tire shop has an attachment for their balancers that utilize the lug holes to mount the rim to the balancer, that how i do them at work since it is the best way to do so since that is how they are mounted to the car

your correct, In WA it is illiegal for a tire shop to mount tires ona modified wheel. Or at least that is what discount tire told me.

Over all i still feel that a machine shop is the best way to go.
