nice truck for sure you just gotta prove everyone at ratsun wrong and make that thing bad ass. i have a nitrogen tank twice that size and it costs $30 to swap out. lasts for the price. yet dont play with the bags for to long your valves take a beeting.

dont know much about the co2. highly compressed air is the safest one and nitrogen you get more air for you buck yet creates moisture in your lines if you dont have a water trap of some kind

smiley720
02-03-2010, 02:16 PM
liquid co2 works fine but is really cold and slow. the speed is the main reason most guys don't run it. I have ran nitrogen, compressed air, helium, co2, and liquid co2. the liquid i find lasts the longest because it refills itselfs everytime you hit the switch, but like i said it's slow. As far as pros and cons, it's all speed. Helium is fastest, then compressed air, nitrogen, then liquid co2.

Ratsun guys HATED that my 4-link was reversed. Not many had anything good to say, but the way I see it, not many of them were even driving bagged trucks. They just go by what the internet says is right or wrong. I'm a minitrucker and noone is gonna tell me that I can't do something.

As for plans, the front starts getting bagged this weekend, Toyota 2wd bumper, shave corners, and finish body work. We have the interior almost done except for the dash and it needs new carpet. I have a deadline of May 1. I have been hitting this thing hard and heavy since Nov 1. So far we have less than $500 in this truck. Thanks for the comments and keep them coming.

how is the nitrogen tank hooked up....to an air tank or straight to the valves?

and does the compressor fill up that tank when its empty or a different air tank?

The garage faces north, my girl and I spent two hours trying to clear the snow and ice enough to get the truck out of the garage so I could spin it around to start bagging the front.

The co2 tank should be run to a resevoir tank and the compressor hooked to that resevoir as well. Since i have no compressor yet, the co2 runs straight to the valves, but its temporary.

nitrogen hooked to your air tank. same air tank as your compresser feeds. the regulator acts like a check valve once your nitrogen is empy.

been following this on ratsun as well.. but i have a question.. is there a bar welded in between your lower link bars?? or is this some type of optical illusion??

Swschz
02-04-2010, 11:19 PM
yea,was going to ask the same thing, also is it angled down more on the left or is that from how the photo was taken?

you might need to run misalignment spacers on your 4link ends if you plan to hit sides....doesnt look like you will get much articulation out of the setup like that.

smiley720
02-05-2010, 02:06 PM
Ok, i avoided the question on Ratsun because of the ridicule I would receive. Yes it's a bar welded between the lower links, its positioned as far back as possible as to not interfere with the forward articulation. I had to put it in because I ran four heiim joints and off-set bag mounts. It works! I've driven the truck and it acts fine. I still get normal lean when cornering and it doesn't effect anything else. I am not running corners on the truck but I am running 8 valves to reduce side to side movement. I want it to sit flat in corners. This is not a race truck, just a minitruck that will be used on weekends to cruise the strip. It's not a daily driver! The rearend still articulates a pretty good amount because of the heims. If it breaks, I cut it off and do something else. Like I said earlier, Nothing is permanent on this truck. So let the onslaught of comments commence.

As for the angle its sitting at, the front tire was flat.

Mr.Ryan
02-05-2010, 04:27 PM
Most of us are not fans of the reverse or even the forward/reverse link setups but I would like to think that most of us understand what you are trying to build and how you want to build it, and have been there before and are mature enough not to bash you for your choices, It is your truck and you should build it as you want to, only when things look unsafe or outright dangerous will we be kind of dickish since we don't want the stigma of all minitruckers build their trucks in less than a week and are held together with duct tape and bondo. I think your truck looks good... Keep it up.

It is your truck and you should build it as you want to, only when things look unsafe or outright dangerous will we be kind of dickish since we don't want the stigma of all minitruckers build their trucks in less than a week and are held together with duct tape and bondo.

i'm not bashing you, or your truck. i wish i had 1/4 of the energy to put into mine that you have. BUT yes, i saw something that is unsafe, and wanted to make sure you were aware of it. when i 1st bagged a truck years ago i didn't have any clue what i was doing, and did it to the best of my ability. and it was rough.. now i know alot more, and have spent alot of time studying it and hope that my truck will be built to the best of my ability.

i know everyone was smashing you on ratsun, and some of it was ridicule, and alot of it was some more knowledable people trying to help you.and it would appear that you pretty much told them to piss off and you were gonna build it however you wanted to. and if something breaks, oh well you'll just fix it later.. why don't you spend some of your time trying to make it as safe and bulletproof as possbile?? even if it means it takes a little longer??

will that bar hold up? probably for a little while.. will it eventually break? yes it will.. it might do it a week from now, or a month from now.. it might happen while you're out cruising by yourself? or it might happen when you have your kids and your girl with you.. who knows. but it will break eventually theres too much stress on it as the vehicle rides down the road. you shoulda spent your energy into putting a 2 link on it, it would be much safer than what you got going on now.

like ryan said we're just trying to watch out for you.. take some of our critisism's seriously.. try to built it right the 1st time, for your and everyone elses safety. :thumb:

I didn't get the "piss off" attitude at ratsun until the namecalling started. I am not in a dark garage all alone, welding shit blindly. I have had quite a few people, hot rod builders, full-chassis drag car builders, etc. come by to give their opinions. They said the bar would work because of the 4 heims, if the rear were bushings then it would tear the suspension apart. As it is, it will work. I am not telling you to piss off, or ignoring your comments. This is how its gonna be for this summer, next winter it will get blown apart again, because that is the fun part. So lets move past this and keep draggin thru.

Sorry I dont have pic updates from this weekends deconstruction of the front end, I left the camera at my girls house. Saturday we took the truck out of the garage and drove around the neighborhood. I got the garage cleaned up and ready for more work. We backed the truck in and I put it on jack stands and tore apart the drivers side. I cleaned up the lower control arm and got it ready for the bag mount. I have parts coming in this week to do away with the front bar that mounts to the frame. Until monday, dive slow and low

How about some whitewalls on the pathy rims? I think spokes would kill the whole vibe of the truck.

revamped exhaust is in!! I took the flange off the manifold and cut it at the plate, flipped it 180 degrees and welded it back together. Cut off a little on the tail side and welded in a piece of 2" pipe. I had to use a patch-a-pipe from autozone to make it to the rest of the exhaust because it makes a weird spiral bend. Now there is no pipe hanging below the frame at all. She's been fully laid, just the way she wanted it. lol

Well my winter plan is pretty much shot with the new job and always being at the hospital for our daughter so I am finishing up the tilt bed and new valve/air management setup. Then I think we will drive it for the summer and I will get to the rest of it next winter. I hope lol

That is so true, and thank you. We are looking at getting a second project but we're having trouble finding a 521 here in Colorado. If you know of one, my buddy just got a clean ass tow pig. He's always down for a road trip.

Well my toolbox is organized. It made taking the front end back apart a snap. Its amazing how fast things go when you can find your tools. lol. I got my new rollpan from GK yesterday, there is something about seeing your name on your new parts that puts a warm feeling in your gut. Lets get busy...

That shit looks bad man. How much does he charge?

He's very reasonable, but he works nights so he's hard to get a hold of. Ive been waiting for a month for him to drive 3 blocks to do this.
I finally worked on the truck for about 2 hours today. Got all the new switches hooked up and compressors wired. I wanted more but margaritas were calling my name.

He also dropped a quickie on my new tool box
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r85/msa1t0t/IMG_20110331_175557.jpg

He'll be at the show doin work, he said he"ll donate everything he makes that day. Bart is a good bro of mine and he has a 71 Datsun 521 layin frame.

I havent had a whole lot of time lately since organizing Scrapin the Rockies is taking up about 90% of my off time. But I did manage to get the exhaust buttoned up and the front end back together yesterday. Today Im hoping to put the front clip back on and get it off the jack stands so I can mount the bed. Maybe some pics later.

Scrapin the Rockies is in Firestone Colorado, just north of Denver about 20 minutes. I have talked with John Mata and if there is enough quality trucks it will be in Minitruckin. Oh, August 14 so there's plenty of time for planning and getting your trucks finished.
I got the front clip back on the truck, front end back together and drove it around the block. Just like last summer!! I'm so ready for this summer's show season in Colorado.

Hmmm... Wish it was closer to Colorado Springs. Good luck with it, I started planning a show and it's a ton of work. Have you given Bob Hase a call? He's been throwing shows for 30 years and has a ton of advice. He posted his number on SSM, let me know if you need help finding it.

Winter is here. Let the tear down begin. So I bought a '90 Toyota ex-cab SR5 thats bagged last month and drove it home. I had to buy a new daily on Monday (2011 Frontie Crewcab v6) so the Toy is being sold. Which puts the 720 back on the top of the priority list for this winter. I have some plans to figure out as to which direction it will be going. Stay Posted.
