View Full Version : My New '87 HB KC build

I went and looked at a parts truck today since I have been needing a new bed. I saw an 87 HB KC on CL for $600 with a blown head gasket. That is all that was listed on the CL ad. So I called the person this morning and set up a time to go check it out. I get there and find this.
87 Nissan King Cab XE trim, auto trans, Z24i 4 cyl., AC, PS, dry rotted tires, busted out KC window, broken taillight, and 94,000 ticks on the OD. Thats right 94,000 miles. Interior is in pretty good shape for being a 22 year old truck. Carpet leaves a lot to be desired but the rest is quite nice. Vents are starting to get that melted look to them and the dash pad has a few cracks.

Left KC window is broke.

After we looked at it, we left. The wife and I talked about it for awhile as we drove home. I wanted this truck bad, but the mileage is so low I cant part this baby out. So I called the lady and offered her $500. She cold turned me down. I told her I will come back and pick it up. Hauled ass to the bank got the $$$. Called my bro and asked him to have the trailer ready so I could hook up and haul ass. I went back and got it.
In our haste to go and get it we ran out of gas. I told my wife we needed to stop and get gas. She says we dont have time and we got plenty. Well pulling a trailer and hooking it in the HEMI, gas goes pretty quick. Here are some more pics. The first is us parked on the side of the road after running out of gas.

My son is getting this one. I bought it with his money. He has been saving for awhile now.
I had a line on a 90 reg cab with 250,000 on it for $700 running and driving. Just needed a few things like tires, windshield, muffler, and the front blinkers. Then the guy calls me back and tells me his mom wont give him the title until he pays her back. That was a week ago. He told me he needed 2-3 weeks before he could sell. So I told him to call me. But now, I dont think I want it. My son is 6' 2" so a King Cab is better for him I feel.

He has no interest at this time in doing this. My son just wants a clean DD for work and school. He doenst get many hours for work. About 4 a day. Then every other Sat. He makes $8 an hour for a real cushy job. I am glad it isnt flippin' burgers. He has an interest in cars. He is in Auto Tech class at school. Hopefully he can take it to school and do some of the work there.

Well we got the head off today. It was deff. a blown head gasket. #3 cyl. had about 1/2" of rusty goo in it. Cyl. walls look like they just have surface rust. Hopefully not pitted. #4 cyl. looks great. Broke one exhaust collector bolt. All in all, got alot accomplished today. I will take pics tomorrow evening when I get home.

The boy got some work done on this thing. Here is the progress.
All the front ends has been removed. Well almost all. The condenser is coming off next. AC is not a priority right now.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/david29/DSC00063.jpg
After head removal. Still have to clean the cylinder walls. Some have some surface rust it appears.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/david29/DSC00064.jpg
The boy came home from Auto zone today with a steering wheels cover and these pretty blue valve stem caps. I told him it would go faster with those. He gave me the look of "yeah right"!

We drove to Shiner, Texas today to get a free Z24 that was complete. It came out of an 86 Hardbody that was titled as an 85 720. Probably one of the first Hardbodies to hit showrooms. 3 years ago, I got the transmission on a trade from the guy. Some time before that this guy removed said motor and tranny to put in a 283 Camaro V-8 engine and T5 tranny. Then removed the bed and put on a flat bed to use as a farm truck. Sometime after I got the tranny, he sold the truck(with a bed he got from a guy in Lousiana), along with 2 4x4 720's and a 4 door Pathy with a bad tranny for $2000. Dam I wish he had called me first, I would have bought the reg cab with the V-8.
Also picked up a set of 15" chrome Pathy wheels with super great tires for the truck for $100. Tires are a little bigger than what the boy needs for the truck but will work for now.
He then takes me in a building that looks like it might fall down anytime. His dad used to race back in the day. Used old Torinos and such. This building has enough Ford stuff to make a cool mint on used parts for people who are restoring cars to stock. Ford Cobra Jet motor intakes, exhaust manifolds, valve covers, etc. Even had 429 motors and all the trimmings.
Then he shows me the various cars and trucks he has. SOme trying to get rid of.
Then I see a 71 Toyota Hilux reg. cab. This truck is cherry clean. Its got a Toyota Celica 18RG dual overhead cam, side draft carbs. But did tell me it came straight from Japan.
I emailed him back yesterday when I got home and told him I wanted it if he decided to sell it. Got the email back today with a response that I got dibs if he does.
Shot of badging.

Gonna hang on to them for a little bit. Mainly to use them for throw down tires when the truck goes in for paint. But first I am letting someone else use them for the same purpose.

Since I am a MOD now, I moved this here where it should be.
Well, today I had to pull out my moms 26' travel trailer to get her ready for next weekend for her. I got my sons truck put next to it where my frame from "The Beast" was. At least thats what is left. Almost a bare frame.
I put on the 15" chrome Pathys. slid on the 1/4 cab sleeper just so its not on the ground. My son likes it. It I dont put it on my truck, it just may end up on his.
The free motor I got from a friend in Shiner, TX is coming along. When I got it, the cylinders who only give me about 5 psi. Now I got #1 and 2 giving me 90 psi each and #3 and 4 are at about 60 psi. Marvels Mystery oil is the shit. So far every weekend I have been putting a little in and cranking it around. I have turned it so much that the oil in the pan is actually circulating all the way to the top onto the cam shaft. Until I get close to the 128 psi for the Z24, I then will remove the head and send it off to the machine shop for a thorough cleaning and what not. I have already let the boy take many parts to school for media blasting and hes got them primered. Now we have to get him some paint. Heres a couple of shots from the side.

The boy has been working on the truck alot lately. He pulled the gas tank after we pulled it out the back of the house on the new concrete driveway.
He also installed the chrome door handles and the chrome mirrors we got awhile back. He has been wiring up the new stereo and getting the interior really clean. Now he has to get a job again so he can save the money for the motor to be rebuilt.
I was going to get it done and put it on my credit card but he messed that up some time back. The little shit took my moms Dodge Ram HEMI out to get his girl friend while my wife and I were gone for the day. He would have gotten away with it if he hadnt been greedy with his time with her. Not to mention losing his innocence. Mom was pissed about that.

Boy,
What are you doing on the internet at school?
But were you pissed? Or did you high-five him? Lol... kids will be kids...:D
Not so pissed about the actual event but the lying that was involved.
When we all were young men/boys, thats all we thought about. Before getting married and hitting the clubs that was the ultimate goal. After having kids and they get old enough to be involved like that, the attitude towards that all changes. Its called being a responsible parent.
I have mixed feelings about talking to my kids about that type of behavior. One one hand I want them to know that its OK to come and talk about it. On the other hand when you tell them not to, they go an do it anyways. I feel its out of spite when they do. When I was his age, I had opportunity to engage in sex but I was too scared to become a statistic. All the lectures from school officials, church people, and so on is enough to scare one not to engage in sex. Kids now days are too stupid or just dont care it seems.

Well it looks as if my son has lost interest in this truck and now is looking a getting a running, driveable car. So it looks like I will be buying this one from him to put the wheels in motion to get this one going.
We should have my 93 back tomorrow from the shop. I will drive it until I get this transformation done.
Plans are to take my 91 that got crunched back in July and transfer the drive rain (motor, transmission, wiring harness-ECM, interior, etc.) into the 87.
We have emissions testing here in the county I live but this one is about to be exempt from that.
So all the blue interior will be for sale soon, auto trans, wiring harness and ECM.
I have 2 Z24i motors, one is complete, the other is almost complete.
The 91 is still being driven as of today. After all has been removed from it, the rest will be up for grabs if anyone needs a new project. It will be a roller when I am done. If it doesnt get bought, then it will get cut up and turned into a homemade trailer using the back half.
david29
02-07-2011, 04:15 AM
Sold the auto trans today.
So the tear down will commence. First thing to go is all the emission crap. That will all be transplanted from the donor truck.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/david29/davidhon37/DSC00628.jpg
Next goes the fenders. What I thought was an all original truck turned out to have aftermarket front fenders. Which I can tell by the stickers on the inside of the fenders. They are black as well. Factory fenders are a shade of greenish primer or sealer.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/david29/davidhon37/DSC00626.jpg
Front end after face lift or deletion I should say.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/david29/davidhon37/DSC00622.jpg
The front of the core support is slightly dented. Also has some rust from a leaking battery. Trying to decide if I want to bother change the core support.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/david29/davidhon37/DSC00627.jpg
The plan is to find some factory fenders. Probably 4x4 ones. Get all the truck stripped of all the windows, rubber, glass and so on to get it prepped for paint. Also got most of the wiring detached from the engine bay and have it ready to be taken out of the cab. I have a new(used) harness coming that was removed from a 93 truck. This will allow me to put the wiring in when I get it back from paint and still be able to drive the 91 that I wrecked last summer.
This truck has one more year before being exempt for the sniffer emissions testing. After 2011, it will only need a safety inspection here in the Houston area.
I get my tax return this week, so I got my wife talked into letting me use some of it along with what I have saved to get the paint and body done. Sure hope she doesnt back out of that agreement.
97_Hrdbdy
02-07-2011, 04:18 AM
i put 4x4 fenders on mine and my core support is bent a little and rusted. i ignored it and now every time my truck is at idle it rattles like a son of a bitch. i say fix the core support

No, I dont have a body shop lined up. Jason(Red Aggie) here at the site knows a guy who he might be taking his to. When I see his done, then I will decide if its the best place for me to take and have mine done. Its going to be a few months before I am ready to do so.

Yup, I'm hoping to have mine in the shop for paint in the next few weeks. It's so ugly right now...lol. I'll let my guy know I might have 2 more trucks lined up and see if I can get some better pricing for ya'll. It's a big shop with lifetime paint warranty, good work, no bs. I've just worked with them enough over the years we're on a first name basis...

Still need to find a newer style hood just so it goes with the new bumper and grille I already have for it. An new hood from the dealer is $350. Aftermarket is less than $100. Cant seem to locate a used hood at all. I had a chance to get one while up in FT. Worth in April but that didnt pan out.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/david29/DSC03017.jpg
I also sold some parts(tires, rims, and a tailgate) today to the tune of $350. Now I got the funds to get the body work and paint done on it as soon as I see what kind of work the guy who is doing RedAggie03's truck looks like.

I was under the impression the truck trans(5 speed) would bolt right up. And I could use the 240SX starter?
The crossmember I thought I might make a new one instead of messing with the oil pan.

New motor and transmission combo for this truck.
1995 3.0 VG30E and 5 speed transmission. I have always wanted a V-6 with a 5 speed. So now I got one. If I dont like the V-6 and miss the KA, I will change it back.

A big thank you again to RedAggie 03-Jason for coming out this morning and helping me get motivated and work on my truck. Here is what we got done. Just have a few other things to remove before it goes to paint and body work to get done. Still have to replace RH door, remove door rubbers, and all glass. As well as pressure wash the chassis, fenderwells, under the bed after I remove it. Going to remove the bed and get after it with some rattle can before hand. Gotta replace some leaf spring bushing, front suspension parts, and the front brakes are getting an upgrade to the double piston calipers and brake hardware. Core support is getting replaced as well but that will be done by the painter.
See pics below.

We did a good job of knocking the gutting process out.
We had talked about the battery tray and how difficult it might be to replace it and I got to thinking. Fuck it!! I am going to tackle it anyways. I used that spot welder bit I showed you and went to town. Some of the spot welds were hard to spot with the pitted rust. I just started at one end and slowly worked to the other end. I used a screw driver to cut through some of it. The side piece was all good. I am going to go to one of the race shops to see if I can find a battery tray with thicker material to replace it with. That other tray I have is starting to get the same way.
I threw some primer on it to keep it from getting worse after I ground most of it off with a flapper disk.

One of them fancy renderings cost money.
I know I want a bright silver. Trying to decide on the second color is a tough one. Or if I want to do a second color.
Medium to dark purple but not too dark. Separated by a neon green.

Well, I had a good month for selling truck parts in Oct. and the first 2 weeks of Nov. I got my funds in place to get this thing painted. Just need to do a couple of custom touches to get done before it goes. That should give me enough time to decide on paint colors.
Also need to gather the parts I want painted(which I have) and lay them together before sending them with the truck.
Plans are to pressure wash engine bay and frame areas, remove bed to clean off grime, and do a mod or 2 to the exiting hood.
Hopefully, right after Thanksgiving, this will get done.

I picked up and have ordered some parts for this truck. Got this console out of a salvage yard a couple of weekends ago. Even got all the brackets, including the one under the Air bag module.
Maybe going to get the bed from the same truck which will cut my costs at the painter for body work on the one I got. Plans are to get 4x4 fenders in Jan. Change out the RH door, cut in some vintage hood vents from a ?(this will be a surprise to all those that dont know already), and get the rest of the rubber, seals, glass and whatever else needs removed before going to paint.
List includes:
Leaf Spring Bushings
Front upper and lower Control arm bushings
Sway Bar bushings
Tension Rod Bushings
2" Block lowering kit

Work will get started this weekend getting it ready for paint some time after the 1st of Jan. Still need me some 4x4 fenders and get the hood modded with some new inserts from a vintage Datsun.
Swap out rearends from the 95 V-6 parts truck I got. Put a manual steering gearbox in it to steer it around the body shop easier.
Remove bed for some pressure washing, Pressure wash the engine bay. Remove the rest of the windows, rubbers and anything I dont want overspray on.
Gotta hang a new door on the right side. The one on the truck has a bunch of bondo in it from the previous owner.

These mirrors are from a 96 Pathy.
It looks like the holes will line up to the HB door holes. The only thing I see is one of the screw mounts just needs to be shortened to be the same length as the rest. I matched it up at the yard and I think it will work nicely.
I thought it would be a nice upgrade difference from the norm.

I got some more parts this weekend.
Power window regs. motors, full door harnesses, PL's, radiator, dizzy cap, fan shroud, fan clutch, fan, clean headlight switch, and a few other odds and ends. Maybe picking up a hood to modify tomorrow. The hood I have, has a dent the size of a lemon and its right on the rib support. I want the truck to be as straight as possible before going to paint in 2 weeks.

Got some work done today.
After gutting basically the whole truck, I realized I needed a way to steer it on and off a trailer to deliver it to the body shop.
That way it would make it easier for them to move it around as well.
Reinstalled the steering column and wheel. I borrowed a manual gearbox from a friends salvage yard from an 88 reg. cab so when turning this thing it wouldnt spill fluid everywhere. Not to mention getting all kinds of trash in the line holes. Got the gearbox put on. Here are some pics.

Still gotta finish the battery box. I got a tray from Summit for an early 70's model Chevy truck. I like the way the battery hold down clamp is one bolt and not the 2 rods and the brace across the top of the battery. Plus I removed the factory tray so the rods stye wasnt going to work. I got out some of the body pieces that will need to be color matched. i gathered up some of the rubber pieces to align the hood and fenders to the core support that is getting replaced. Still have lots to do before it goes in 2 weeks. With the cold weather and rain we had last weekend and the holidays, I didnt get as much done as planned.
Picking up another hood next weekend to do a, well thats a surprise. Cant tell you that just yet.

Acquired a few more parts yesterday. I had to return some cores and a couple pieces I decided didnt work.
I saw a 96 Pathy last week that was getting ready to be put on the floor. I got the power mirrors and the factory driving lights(front bumper).
Also got these door pods for deeper speakers. They dont look to bad holding the, up to the doors. Now I gotta see if they fit when the door is closed.

The fenderwell has a couple of humps in it. The tray has a low dip in the middle. I hammered down the middle to be a little smoother. Thought about cutting the middle out but not enough hours in the day. The side closest to the fender, I was going to use a couple spacers(from a seat belt bolt) to give it better support. If I have time tonight, i make take my cutoff wheel and make it fit better. I wanted to get it done so I can have it painted to match the truck. Putting the factory plastic tray under battery to catch battery acid that always seems to leak no matter what kind of battery you get.
I never got time over the holidays to clean as much as I wanted to due to the weather. I might try and do it Friday night but lack help to lift the bed off. Going by the carwash Friday and hit the frame up front and as much as the rest of the frame. if all else fails, I will do all that after I get it back from paint.

I will know tomorrow but honestly I am not in a hurry to get it back right away. This will give me time to do some much needed organizing and the possibility of renting a 2 car bay(storage) to put both trucks in for the rebuild after I get it back. It just depends on if I want to pay $200 a month for a couple of months to get it done.

I am going back next Sat. to pick my truck back up. The guy wants way more than the truck is worth to paint it the way I want it done. Even if I settle for the single color paint, its only $300 cheaper. Also he tells me the cost of materials is $1600 which is included in the price. I say BULLSHIT on the materials cost. I know paint materials are expensive, but REALLY?
$3500 2 tone paint
$3200 single color paint
Only body work is changing the core support, lining up fenders, hood and one door. The rest of the body is straight with exception to some small dings here and there. No major body damage at all.

I'm sad it didn't fit into your budget, but there must be a reason it is that high. Mine did not cost that much, but I also did not do the jams, engine bay, core support or all of that alignment stuff. I'm sure that all added up quick. I can tell you that it would be right the first time though...you get what you pay for. You have seen some of the trucks with f'ed up paint jobs where people tried to get a deal from a buddy. Did you tell him it was out of your budget and if there was anything that he could not do like the engine bay to save costs? You could always rattle can that with nice results. Anyway, good luck. Victor told me his paint jobs start at $5000. I aint painting no $60,000 Porsche or anything exotic.
I even called him back to ask if I kept it the same color as factory so the door jambs didnt have to be painted and it only knocked off $200.
Victor told me because of the several people you sent over to him is why you gave the deal you did.
I just cant justify spending that kind of cash when the truck isnt worth that much. I had a budget of $2000, maybe even go as much as $2500.
If I spend that much more, then it takes sway from the other things I want/need to replace.
I know one gets what they pay for. I just wish he would/could of let me know this Sat. before I left the truck. Its a little irritating I now have to get another trailer to go and pick it up. The one I borrowed, cant be borrowed this weekend. Probably have to go and rent one for the weekend.
I dont know, after all the shit lately going on, this kind of tops it off.
1st off, personal shit going on, then the UPS shipment last week I sent out went up in flames on I-45. now this. Seriously thinking about just going and buying something in good shape and sell of all this shit to get it over and done with.

Thats insane price for a single/2 tone paint job. Considering you did ALL of the major labor stuff yourself. Hell shop I worked at would do Candy paint jobs (car/Jams/bay if motor was out ) for $3000 +/- . An Base/Flake & Candy was only like $600-$1000 for material cost (depending on color/color shifting ).They were no bs paint jobs either he had ppl coming from Miami,New York,Jersey etc etc to have the shop paint the car.

I paid a little more than I wanted but now have some mud flaps, filler neck, wiring harness, and a tailgate to sell off to make some $$ back. Both weekend trips down to the opposite side of Houston cost me $150 and my time with having to rent a tow dolly and fuel. Damn this shit is getting expensive.
This will also get me a little more time to do some more mods and much needed cleaning, painting and repairing of some small dings I can do myself.

Looks like this thing will finally get to paint this weekend.
After dropping it off, I am picking up an 89 2 door Pathy w/V-6 and 5 speed from the same area.
Also probably moving all my stuff to a shop this weekend. Need more room to have it all. Having the extra space to reassemble the 87 when I get it back will be plus. Not to mention the rest of 95 I need to disassemble to put on the 87.
The space is a 24x24 with 2 roll up doors, electricity included, lights, 24 hour monitored security, 24 hour access. All for about $200 a month.
Also got a quote on rebuilding the 3.0 V-6 motor I have to the tune of $2500. Shit, I can order a new motor from Ford for the Villager application for less than $3000.
Or, I can buy a new Chevy 350/5.7 from Jegs for $2000 shipped. Then I would have to track down 2 five speed Chevy S-10/Camaro transmissions to use the Camaro case with the gearing from the S-10.

My truck made it to the paint shop of a buddy of mines today. Some last minute swap out of better parts this morning and off she went. I am getting it done for less than $2500. Its getting a 2 tone. Not quite sure the second color is going to be but I know I want silver as my primary. I cant decide on the other color but I have a few weeks to make up my mind. this guy worked for Nissan back when these trucks were hitting showrooms so he knows how to work on them. I almost gave up on the truck but decided to see it through. I am having him paint the black Pathy power mirrors(so I can decide if I want chrome or go for the sport look), some V-6 valve covers, and several other possible parts. Front bumper I got today is going as soon as I can get it to him.
Even considering going to Pathy front end since I picked an 89 Pathy 2 door today for a smokin' deal.

I see the passanger fender is the OEM one off of my truck! :)
Glad to see you are going to see it though, it's worth it. I had another person stop me yesterday wanting to buy my truck and commenting how nice it is. It makes all of the work worth it. Let me know when you get it back and I'll help get it back together if you'd like.
More pics!

After looking at the white ones, they had a couple small dings. On the left side, somehow happened when it was at that shop(cant remember the name) on Harwin.
Hell I have even offered to buy your truck.

^^^ I cant wait as well. Its been a long overdue process. Brown truck and USPS have been busy. Got me some new parts in the last few days. More to come soon.
Old school square tube STULL grille. Thinking I might take the new Pathy lights of my new Pathy and put them on the 87 when I get it back.

Since the truck is getting a brake upgrade to V-6 calipers from the 95 donor truck, I thought some new rotors were in order. Going to get ceramic pads as well. These will look nice behind the 18" chrome 5 spoke Titans.

Keep it up . I'm following your build, hope to see it come through. Wish I could've grabbed your rollin' chassis, I have been striking out on finding a good frame/base to start with. Just curious, why the 6 with the 5-speed?

I have always wanted a V-6 5 speed combo in a stock Nissan HB. I got a good deal on the donor truck. So that is what I am going with. Unless something changes. The V-6 has low oil pressure after it warms up. Its got over 200,000 miles on it. Trans is smooth sounding. Plus it has the HB233 rear with 3.7 gear ratio.
Thinking about going V-8 because the cost to long block it, and get a 5 speed chevy and all the trimmings is about the same as rebuilding the Nissan 3.0 V-6.

Cool cool. V-8 are cool in compact trucks, but I'd keep it Nissan IMO. No replacement for displacement I understand, I just like using brand for brand. I think a nicely built 3.0 would be plenty of fun! It'd still be Nissan too. It's whatever, to each their own. Won't knock it if you go that route. Just keep it going!

Or I can get a brand new V-6 from Ford(from the 95 Nissan Quest/Mercury Villager) for less than $3000 delivered. Comes with 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. So it depends on what I feel like spending.
Or I can just find a good running low mileage motor from a PAthy or another HB to put in it.

With those 3.0's from the vans, is there a difference between the truck vs. van engine layout? As one being fwd and other rwd, I would just think there's a difference. I have no experience on these.
I guess your wanting some torque with this build. Have you put any research on a mildley built 3.0? Nothing crazy, just a lil bore, cam and some bolt on goodies. I can see that in that price range, then you'd have new and pep. Without that wonderful warranty though.....

Build a VG33 :) There is a sweet write up on one of the offroad boards on how to do it. I think it fits your situation pretty well for an engine build.

My buddy who has a salvage yard, was doing a search for compatible parts for Nissan trucks and that motor came up as compatible.

But will all the bolt on parts such as intake, exhaust mannies, and all the other parts swap over to the VG33?
I dont know much of anything about the VG30E much less the VG33.

Supercharged vg33 would be nice from a desert runner frontier, but now were talkin out of budget and modifying. I'm sure that's not in the schedule. Well whatever it is, I'm sure it's what you want!

Basically you use the block from VG33e and everything else from the VG30e or something like that.

No update to it right now. My guy was still recovering from knee surgery but should be getting on it soon. I will be going down to take a peek when it gets done with body work and lining up all the sheet metal. I will be seeing him this Sat. at our diecast club meeting.
I am about to order $1000 worth of rubber seals for the whole truck plus a few things for my other truck.

Talked to my painter today. Handed him $500 to get her started. Damn that hurt so good to let that cash I have been sitting on for some time go.
