View Full Version : From DB Drag StreetMax to Bass Race

Figured I'd finally copy my buildlog over here, since it's about to resume again, and I'll have updates very very soon.
Here's the truck as it started. The loudest DB Drag StreetMax 1-2 vehicle in the U.S.A. Rules were a single battery, 4 amps and 2 subs.

1st thing I did was strip off all the stickers:

Then we started with this:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b194/rich1034/DSC01985.jpg
Added the magic knob:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b194/rich1034/DSC01984.jpg
And ended up with this:

160db and old sheetmetal don't mix, it started tearing the passenger's door at both corners of the window:

I have 3 weeks off because I took another job, and my current job found out about it, so they put me on administrative leave. So expect quite a bit of progress, especially on the enclosure build in the next couple weeks.

I think I'm going to have to put a full spring pack back in the truck. Carried 6 sheets of MDF in the back, and it was putting a hurting on the suspension in the back, and there will be more weight than that in there when I'm done.

I bet that thing weighed a couple of tons on the ass ened with all the 2x4,MDF and fiberglass in it. Removing all that alone had to have been a bitch.
stratusrt01
10-19-2008, 11:29 PM
it actually weighed about 2200lbs with the 4" of concrete it had in it. I just cut enough to get the bed off, and then yanked the entire bed off with the rest still in it.

I'm going to run a tapped horn with a pair of 18's. It's about 35 cubic ft gross.

10-23-2008, 04:31 PM
what would be the better boom for the buck (8) Kicker comp vr 15s i can get for about 125-150 a piece or (3) btl 18s fully loaded or (3) dc audio level 5 18s? I need to find me a snug its killing me LoL back in the day i had an isuzu with (6) l7 15s (12) zr1000s an havent had anything like that since it was totaled i currently have (2) cvrs on a bxi1606 an jus not happy with it anymore also i would sell these 2 an buy all newer subs
stratusrt01
10-23-2008, 07:37 PM
I would go with the BTL's or Level 5's personally. The Kickers will give you more cone area, but it's just fun locally when you have something noone else does, and there are very few Level 5's out there.
On a build note: The accordian boot finally arrived after what seems like forever, so building will commence this weekend.

oh, they're coming for sure. It's supposed to rain Saturday, so It'll probably be Sunday before I really get started, the box is too big to build it inside the shop, so it has to be done outside.
stratusrt01
10-24-2008, 01:15 AM
To show the actual size of these subs, I put a normal size 10" subwoofer next to them for comparison. Everyone who's seen this pic asked if it was an 8" sub.

10-25-2008, 06:13 PM
It's looking like it will be Monday before I can start on mine, I just got a few box orders I need to fill this weekend. I think DJ is coming up Monday to help though. If you want to stop by after you get off work, that's cool.
Started working on a few things today. Got the boot finished up top and glued in:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b194/rich1034/nissan%20pics/DSC02371.jpg
My buddy is coming over when he gets off work with some sheetmetal, so we can fix where the previous owner overcut, so I can attach the boot at the bottom:

10-25-2008, 06:44 PM
Tomorrow starts the work on the half-pipe for the back. Then it's on. I expect for the bass side to be ready by Thursday or Friday. Mids and highs to be playing by next Monday.
stratusrt01
10-26-2008, 11:25 PM
Got a little done, but not as much as planned. Had a few customer boxes I had to take care of first, then I had to go restock on supplies.
I did get the rear wall rebuilt and the boot on the bottom. Don't worry, it's allowed to be ugly, you won't be able to see it when it's done:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b194/rich1034/nissan%20pics/DSC02373.jpg
And here's the base of the enclosure sitting in place, to give you an idea of how large it will be:

I'm going to try to get a lot of work done on it tomorrow, but being by myself in the shop, I don't know how much actual assembly will happen until tomorrow night when I'll have help. But I will be getting all the panels prepped to go together at least, and hopefully be able to assemble them tomorrow night.

stratusrt01
10-30-2008, 01:23 AM
No clue on the db's yet actually. It's tuned to 33hz, so it's not made to burp high scores anymore, this one is made to play music all day and do 149.9db average on music for bassrace.
Got more work done today, although most of it you can't see.
Rewired for the Kinetik 16V batteries, now I'm charging all the time at 18.4V, also got all the wiring run into the back for the amps. Now I just have to lengthen a few wires and loom them to make them look good.

stratusrt01
10-31-2008, 02:13 PM
I'm using a 300 amp Ohio Generator. It's a large Chevy casing with custom brackets. There's no way to get over 160-175 reliably out of a Nissan casing.
stratusrt01
10-31-2008, 02:28 PM
Bad news, I have to redo the baffle to move the subs further forward. The current location of the subwoofers makes the tuning somewhere in the neighborhood of 80hz. That's no good, so I'm going to rebuild the baffle this weekend and move the subs as close to the mouth as possible to bring the tuning down in the 30's where it should be. This also means I have to run the subs inverted, which I'm not a big fan of, but maybe I'll like it afterall, I mean, seeing this in the rear view (if my truck actually had a rear view) wouldn't be so bad:

ScottXGTR
10-31-2008, 09:55 PM
inverted wont be too bad if the baskets had a nicer color on them. :2:
stratusrt01
11-01-2008, 02:10 AM
If I absolutely love this enclosure, before SBN in March, I'll probably end up rebuilding the subs just in case, and if I do that, I'll take the baskets in and have them powdercoated a different color just to set them off.

Already fired them up inverted to see how much mechanical noise they have, and it's not much at all. Nothing you'll be able to hear over the bass, for sure.

motor noise from inverting subs?
does inverting them affect anything except looks?

11-04-2008, 12:58 AM
I miss db draggin... Im 02 i had an astro van with 12 12in hart professionals 16 amps dual alternator setup.. I got invited to world finals in ss 9+ but back then i didn't own a trailer and the van wasn't making the trip to TN without falling apart.. I keep saying i'm gonna build something again but db drag has dropped off drastically in my area so it wouldn't be worth it... Great build though..
1sick94hb
11-04-2008, 02:09 AM
inverting depends on the sub. Yes you can get motor noise from it, some do some dont.

Got blue light on the amp, that's a good sign........lol
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b194/rich1034/nissan%20pics/DSC02395.jpg
And measuring voltage at the amp terminals, I came up with this:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b194/rich1034/nissan%20pics/DSC02396.jpg
Got the first coat of paint on the inside of the enclosure, have to do a 2nd tomorrow, and then cover the outside panels with carpet tomorrow, and we'll be golden to do a little testing. The rain here the past couple days have really slowed me down.
1sick94hb
11-05-2008, 02:57 AM
