Hey, can I put E85 gasoline in my truck? There is a gas station in my town that is selling it for 2.99 a gallon. But, I know some older vehicles can't run it. And if i can't is there any easy mods i can do to allow it to run E85? thanks

From Wiki

"E-85 ethanol is used in engines modified to accept higher concentrations of ethanol. Such flexible-fuel vehicles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexible-fuel_vehicle) (FFV) are designed to run on any mixture of gasoline or ethanol with up to 85% ethanol by volume. There are a few major differences between FFVs and non-FFVs. One is the elimination of bare magnesium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium), aluminum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminum), and rubber (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber) parts in the fuel system. Another is that fuel pumps must be capable of operating with electrically conductive ethanol instead of non-conducting dielectric gasoline fuel. Fuel injection control systems have a wider range of pulse widths to inject approximately 40% more fuel. Stainless steel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stainless_steel) fuel lines, sometimes lined with plastic, and stainless steel fuel tanks in place of terne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terne) fuel tanks are used. In some cases, FFVs use acid-neutralizing motor oil. For vehicles with fuel-tank mounted fuel pumps, additional differences to prevent arcing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_arc), as well as flame arrestors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flame_arrestor) positioned in the tank's fill pipe, are also sometimes used.[citations needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)]"

I've ran E85 in my 06 Silverado, it has the flexfuel 5.3 V8 in it. The fuel costs less, but my truck got worse mileage on the E85, dont know what the deal was. Thought that vehicles were supposed to run cleaner and be more fuel effecient on the stuff. There's not an E85 station here in town though, I've only ran it when I've been out of town and just happened to see it. Right now E85 is $2.69 in the nearest city that its in and regular is $2.99 here in town this morning.

i've heard that even regular w/ethanol in it gives shittier gas milage. I personally feel that E85 is a marketing ploy by the liberal media to convince us that things are going to be ok while the large corporations continue to screw us, and that's why I don't watch reality TV or listen to any bands that have sold more than 100 records. Don't believe the hype!

Yeah, I'm with the jrock and others. The e-85 is a scam, and the mileage you get out of it is much lower per tank...so by the time you are done with a trip, you will have burned more 'clean' fuel and paid more money to fill up more often than if you ran regular e10 pump gas.

Not only is it a scam, the agriculture departments have said that even if we wanted to, we could not keep up with the demand for the crops needed to make enough e85 to supply a good portion of the nation.

Good idea on paper, but just doesn't work in the real world....like most liberal ideas.

And Jrock...your band that sold 88 copies sucks...they are a bunch of mainstream sellouts. If more than 4 people know about the band, they suck...PERIOD!

u guys are out of wack. 95% of brazils fuel needs are met with ethanol, but made from sugar, not corn feed stock. We are just stupid and influenced too much by industry lobbiests.
Ethanol is nice because its a renewable resource where the profit goes to our farmers, not like oil, but it has its limitations.

And to answer the first question, no. e85 will f'up your truck and run crappy unless it was specifically designed to run on e85.

Comparing Brazil to the USA is apples and oranges man.

We are ALMOST twice as populated (305 million vs 187 million), there are more vehicles per citizen in the states, and then there is the climate to take into consideration. The majority of Brazil is tropical and can sustain sugar cane growth...the states...not so much.

Brazil may be able to sustain 95% of their vehicles on ethanol, but they would struggle to keep 25% (probably much less percentage wise) of american vehicles in e85 based fuel.

It's a nice thought, but not practical or possible at this point in time in the states.

yeah, using corn to make it is a dumbass idea... but you can grow assloads of sugar in places like florida and louisiana. or you can just keep taking the little packets off the table from Denny's. Not that I would eat in such a mainstream facility. Personally, I have converted my truck to run on a fuel I process from the farts of the African Spotted Leopard.
