My names Joey and i livein central florida (ocala). I picked up an 87 HB sunday for $600. Its pretty clean but it had a blown head gasket. Ive been a ford master tech for about 7 years so when it comes to the mechanical end im pretty handy. That being said im complety new to mini trucks and bodywork all together. I want to do all the work myself. Right now im in the middle of 2 things at once, the head gasket and also the body has a little rot in the driver and pass side kick panel area. I think this is a great site so i figured i would share my progression now mind you i havent even had the truck a week but im trying to plug along a little every day. Any pointers, advise and dos and donts would be greatly appreciated thanks.
Here is the truck when i brought it home

A little update. I got the head off today cleaned and straight edged the block, checked out ok, and cleanedout the cab. Next is to sand down and spray the inside of the cab. Im gonna just send the head to get milled i dont want to take any chances the gasket blew between 3 and 4 which seems to be pretty common so i dont want to take any chances. hopefully i can have it up and running this week. And finally start working on the fun stuff.

I know you probably already know this with being a master tech for 7 years but make sure to replace the head bolts with new ones.
I didnt once, and had to do what you are doing know, 4 months later. That shit sucked. Did you wedge something into the front of the timing cover to hold the chain tensioner in? If that thing popped out you will have to pull the timing cover. Might not be a bad idea to replace the timing chain set while you have it apart.

yea i always toss the bolts and i actually found a $6 tool on ebay to hold the chain in place works pretty good i was a little concerned about using wood.

cool to see another fl member doing something. If i ever get a free weekend i could possibly help you out with the welder if you want to stitch them in and body seal them. im a master tech in the tampa area. I worked for hummer for four years and am now at cadillac. You decided what route you want to go with it (bags, static, stock)? if your doing body work you might want to check out GrantKustoms. They have a lot of stuff for the hb's (fillers, roll pans, ect.)
