This noise is driving me NUTS....please help. Got the truck back after having the harmonic balancer replaced, and guess what, engine still rattling at 2500. Granted, the HB needed replacing, but I'm firing those guys anyway. Didn't bother to road test it to see if the f'ing problem I brought it in for was fixed.

Sounds like it could be the valve train, but only after it gets good and hot on the hiway for 10 minutes or so. Never around town. And after I get in town after 30 mile trip, the sound happens all through the gears, almost like the valve train is loose. Today I had to run a few errands, and after the temp gauge went down a little, the rattling stopped and she ran quiet as ever? New (2yr old) radiator, hoses, belts, plenty of coolant, new oil, (NOT 5 quarts), quart of Lucas, some Sea Foam.

I've noticed she seems to be running a little hotter since the timing chain was replaced, also mpg's are down from 25 to around 20 or so. Used to run a little below mid way on the temp gauge, now a little over half. That's when the rattling seems to happen. Could this be a timing issue? Before the chain was replaced she used to ping a little on some of the long uphill grades coming home, not anymore.

This noise isn't pinging though, sounds more like my old malibu at 120 when the valves would float. If too much timing advance causes pinging could too retarded cause hotter operating temp, less mpg and this floating valve noise?

PLEASE HELP ME, I'M GOING NUTS!

Thanks Guys,
Kyle

No to oem parts, yes to filter, NO rattle on startup at all. Only happens when the engine temp gets to the slightly over half way mark on the temp gauge, after 10 or so miles at 70mph...it's been 105 here. Maybe the thermostat? BTW, doesn't make the noise at 70/3000rpm...only at 60mph/2500 rpm or so.

Where the hell is the thermostat?

Thanks ,
Kyle

Well guys,

Don't know what the rattling part was....apparently it wasn't too good. Went out to eat last night, started it to go home, heard a loud metallic clunk, followed by many clunks. Not sure, probably a rod came loose, didn't loose oil pressure and got me home. Couldn't ask for more than that.

Not gonna throw any more money at this one. It's currently for sale. What's a good asking price for a truck w/blown motor, good tires, good body. Cold a/c...ha, ha!

Thanks,
Kyle

too bad i didnt read this before. mine did the same thing, when the timing chain was replaced your oil system empties out, so you probably had a moment of 0 oil pressure on the initial start, thus a dry start, killing one of the rod bearings (if not more).

That's not too cool, you know if I'd just left the damn timing chain alone I'd be $700 richer and still have a good dependable truck. Why don't the mechanics that do this for a living know this?

When I picked it up I said, cool now I'll get 200k more out of her. They all just looked at each other. I felt like I was the only one in the room that wasn't in on the joke. Oh, well. Live and learn. The mechanic probably knew the score and the prick let me throw $5oo more at it for a new harmonic balancer. The old one would have been fine for the next 1000 miles till the engine turned loose.

At least she waited till I was idling through a parking lot instead of 70 mph down the interstate. That would of been ugly.

Got me a 2000 crown vic police interceptor today with 46 k. Handling package, oil cooler, trans cooler, new tires and the same 25 mpg as the truck. And the added value of looking like a cop=no mo frickin tailgaters.

How does the dry start f up the bearings, and how would you prevent it and how would I prove negligence on the part of the garage or were they negligent?

Thanks,
Kyle
